WMP9 and .asf or .wmv error

    Hello to all,

I recently tried to play a .asf file with Windows Media Player 9 (that last I remember, I could play before with WMP 9) and got the unhelpful "Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." error message and WMP 9 closes. If I reproduce the error and click on more information I get:

AppName: wmplayer.exe AppVer: 9.0.0.2980 ModName: unknown
    ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: e8505100

If I get more information again, I just get a whole bunch of hex values and stuff
that I can't really make sense of .

I have since found that WMP 9 will now consistanly crash when I try to play any .asf
or .wmv file giving the same error each time. It can play all other file types fine.

I currently have DivX, Xvid, Matroska and Ogg playback capability and am wondering if it's possible maybe one of these is confusing WMP? I also note that this hotfix was installed by Windows Update and wonder if this may be causing some problem?

    I am running Windows XP.

Anyway, if anyone has this problem or knows a fix, please let me know. Thank you in advance.

Try reinstalling the WMP9 codec pack.

Hey, thanks for the reply. I noticed you suggested reinstalling the WMP codec in another thread in this area and had tried it at that time without success. But this morning, I reinstalled direct X 9, uninstalled the Matroska playback package I had installed, reinstalled the WMP codec again, then reinstalled the Matroska package but with out that MatroskaProps thing and I can now again play .asf and .wmv files with WMP 9! So not sure which parts of this proceedure fixed my porblem but as long as it is fixed I don't care. Thanks for your help.

"I reinstalled direct X 9" - was probably the "curative"...

I had the same problem. After uninstalling the matroska (?) mkv software, wmv's and avi's play fine.

Me too. After uninstalling the matroska, everything solved.
So 100% is matroska problem instead of direct x

It was ffdshow, or better the build of ffshow we had in the 1.1.1 pack that was causing the problem, but nb only on some machine. We believe that all these users were having another codec pack installed, and one of the filters coming with it was incompatilbe with the ffdshow build in our pack.

To confirm what i say, you might as well just google for the latest build of ffdshow, and install that with the matroska pack still installed. You will see, after that all WMV and ASF files will play fine again.

BTW, we distribute ffdshow as a courtesy to our users. Its not our software, we just help distributing it. Statements like

'So 100% is matroska problem instead of direct x'

are understandable, because for you as users it looks like the matroska pack is the culprit. Still, it hurts ..... In 1.1.2 version of the pack, all is fine, no problems reported still.

P.S. It is impossible that 'matroskaprop.exe' will interfere with ASF or WMV playback, as reported above. It is a plugin into Windows Explorer, and has nothing to do with Windows Mediaplayer or playback in general ....
