Playback freezing near end of movie

    Hi

I am using DVD Shrink 3.1.7.6 to backup my DVD collection. I can shrink my movies with no problems, and I can then watch these movies using Power DVD to open the files. I have no problem viewing these movies when reading the compressed files generated by DVD Shrink direct from the hard drive.

On writing the files to a blank DVD and placing in either of my set top players (also tried neighbours machines) it would all seem to be going great. When the DVD player gets to about the middle of the movie it begins to freeze for a few seconds and then continue. This behaviour slowly gets worse as the movie progresses until in the last chapters the player just sounds like it is continuously seeking.

I would guess that the film is written sequentially and that the last chapters are written on the outer edge of the disk. I have a new Sony Dual Layer DRX-700UL DVD writer and I have tried Philips, Sony,TDK and unbranded media all giving the same results.

Am I doing something wrong ? Is my burner faulty?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Regards

    Andy

"I have tried Philips, Sony,TDK and unbranded media all giving the same results."

Try and use Ritek G04 media; burn at 2x speed, if you are not already; check and see if there is a firmware update available for your DVD burner.

            Hi there aharcup...

I have been recommending the Zero Defex Extreme Purple from www.cd-rmedia.co.uk to everyone who is looking for the best disks...

It's obvious that I use them myself and always have... No labels though...

I have a Sony DVD DW RW-U10A Firmware 1.1d, Sony drives in general like this media... Saying that they are very compatible with everything I have come across, Too much too mention.

Hrmmmm. Have you tried upgrading the firmware of your burner?
When I had some problems with DVD playback/burning I just updated the firmware and it fixed it all up.

                Hi,
Im having this problem too. The movie will skip then continue & it gets worse till it freezes. If i skip ahead 3-4 chapters it seems fine until it does it again (not always tho) My dvd player is Pioneer DV-355, Dvd Burner is Pioneer DVR-107D firmware 1.18 (latest). Im using Shrink 3.2 & burning with Nero 6.3.1.17 & Shintaro dvd-r 4x discs. Could it be a re-encoding problem it seems that way?

                Thanks..

                Cpu = Athlon XP2700+
                Ram = 512ddr pc3200
                O/S = WinXP Pro SP1
                ASPI Layer = Adaptec 4.60

P.S Whats the best ripping method? aspi? spti? Shud i update to adaptec 4.71.2?

                thanks

                  "Shintaro dvd-r 4x discs"

You might want to try a different (higher quality) brand of media - such as Ritek...

The Zero defex extreme purple I use are Rytek G04 at heart..

To achieve a perfect burn I use nero (used 5.5.1.56) with no problems.

I dont label the dvd'd it causes to many issues with the playback.

I allways recommend the latest updates, but as always you should make sure that a backup is performed B4 updating.

About the aspi question. I am a little confused with that question. simply because I am under the impression that aspi (Aspi layer) is a windows burning engine, and different drive manufactureres develop their own version of that aspi layer to better work with their drives...

The spti (SCSI Pass-Through Interface) I can only recommend that you read more about it here:

The best way of ripping is DVD shrink 3.2 or dvd decripter.

                    Hope I opened a door.

                      Hi Fil,
I thought the ASPI layer & so on were ways to access the drive whether it be read or write.... I have backed up 7 dvd's now & only one wudnt play so i tried backing it up again & it works fine so i dont know if it is the discs im using. Also the disc that wudnt play wasnt label'd...

                      Thanks

                        Hi Davo81

Yor right the aspi is what you say... Got crossed wires...

but when you asked a ripping questing regarding a aspi or spti I was a little confused as to what you meant...

regardeless, you always will need a drive to rip a dvd.

                        I use the programs mentioned.

on the disk issue it is possible you had a bad disk...

thanks and hope is well now...

                          hi
I just purchased a toshiba SD-R5272 burner and TDK 4x dvd-r blanks and ive also ran into this problem but it doesnt happen all the time, I used dvd decrypter and shrink 3.2. I checked out those blanks that were recommended but is their a place to get them in the US? or another good brand? thanks for any help.

                            Hi Savage,
I just checked for a firmware update for your burner and there isnt one available... All u can try is changing disks

Wot program are you using to burn? If its shrink burning with Nero maybe try updating to the latest Nero..

Wot DVD player are you playing it back on?

Verbatim are also good quality disks.

                            Cheers
