Can't get 16X disk to work in 8X burner - Unusual?

I have a Mad Dog Dominator 6-in-1 8X DVD Burner. I always buy Memorex DVD-R blank disks and have never had a problem burning with Nero through DVD Shrink. I just bought some new Memorex DVD-R blank disks and kept getting an error code. After much ado, I found in the log a reference to an illegal disk. I checked the disks and they are 16X disks. I then used some of the old 8X disks I had and had no problem.

    My questions are:

    1. Is it unusual that the 16X disks wouldn't work in the 8X burner or is that to be expected?

    2. Is there anything I can do to get my burner to write on these 16X disks? I checked and it seems I have the most recent version of the driver for the DVD burner - NEC DVD_RW ND-2500A - Version: 1.06 and I just updated my Nero version to version: 6.6.0.16.

I wouldn't really care except I already opened a package of 50 and also, Best Buy only sells the 16X now, making me wonder if the 16X is the thing of the future, in which case I'd better figure out how to solve the issue.

    Thanks

It's a different manufacturer on the disks, memorex just brands them after
buying them from someone else. The best approach is to update the firmware
for your burner or return the disks.

I checked the firmware and I believe Version: 1.06 is the most recent version of NEC DVD_RW ND-2500A. You mean, it doesn't have to do with the 16X vs. 8X disks? Because all of the Memorex disks I've used prior to buying these were 8X ones. These are 16X. I figured that was the problem.

        What brand do you use?

        Thanks for the help.

made in japan when I can find them

They won't let you open the package and do a disk id on them, uck!

I have burned 3 or 4 coasters in a row to prove a point and then taken
          them back(Imation on a plextor).

The new 16x disks from memorex were the ones I had trouble with, lower quality than the 8x I had been using, of course memorex switched on me
          twice at the 8x speed.

Thanks - I'll probably have a friend do it who knows more about computers than I do because I don't want to take any chances with screwing it up!

Interesting. Is the 16X going to replace the 8X, or is it a situation where you can buy one or the other?

4x disks replaced 2x, 4x is getting harder to find now, 8x will be around for a while.
I am currently using 4x(made in japan) disks I buy online. Some of my burners
want to burn them at 12x. others are still finding 2x tdk's for sale.
