Can't play DVD; there's sound but no image [tried everything it seems]

    Hi there;

I've been looking all over the internet for codecs or whatever to be able to solve the following problem but so far, nothing has worked.. not even the info I've read here when it comes to this issue.
I'll quickly describe the problem; basicly I can not play some dvd's [all UDF files] in windows media player [or anywhere else for that matter]. I do hear the sound of the video but I get no image what so ever. I've tried the info that's on microsoft's website [turning off the "use layers" thing in the advanced tools] and I've downloaded quite some codecs but all to no avail what so ever [perhaps I should delete them all then? Don't know how though.].
Does anyone have any idea what I might have overlooked? I'm getting quite desperate..
Oh ye and I'm running windows XP and windows media player version 10. Winamp doesn't even seem to be able to open the dvd.

Thanks on advance for the help and if you need more info, please just ask! I've also enabled a screenshot of what the gspot generates when I load in the VIDEO_TS file there.

ffdshow is set to play the video. it should not play mpeg-2/dvd video.

uninstall all codec packs, download 'media player classic'. open it, play your files

as a reference, here's my list of what is needed regarding codecs/filters on any PC:

nvidia purevideo codec (you can substitute windvd/powerdvd here) -for dvd's/mpeg-2 (i use dscaler instead, IMO it beats everything else)

real alternative - so you don't have to install 'realone player'

quicktime alternative - so you don't have to install quicktime

media player classic - extremely stable and fast media player. best player ever.

oggDS filter - directshow filter for ogm/ogg

windows media player 10 if you wish

First of all thanks a lot for the swift reply =]

Can you tell me how exactly I can delete all the codecs I've installed? [I should delete every single one then, right?]

After I've done that I'll immediatly try what you suggested!

My dvds won't play anymore either!

After days of searching the web I have arrived here and I was happy to see this thread. I'm having a similar problem, maybe the same steps will help me as well, I don't know, let me know what you think??

I bought a new cpu a month ago. It's a HP Pavilion AMD Athlon 64 3500. It came with an onboard vid card, ATI Radeon Express 200. Everything worked fine including playing DVDs. I recently installed a Albatron GeForce 6600 256MB DDR 16x PCI Express Card w/TV and I can now play the lastest games and they look awesome. BUT.... when I put a DVD in to play, now I get a black screen with choppy sound!! This was using InterActual player. I also had WinDVD and it would play the DVD with a picture but everything was stutterey. SO....

In the last week here is all I tried on the advice of people on other forums.

Tried to disable video overlay in the nvidia settings. - My card does not allow me to do this.

Reinstalled the DVD players. - Nothing changed.

Check in the BOIS at startup to make sure PCI-E was selected and not the onboard card. - PCI-E is selected.

Disable old onboard card in Device Manager.- The only card listed there in my new GeForce and it is enabled and working properly.

Reinstalled my codecs. - No change. I don't know if that is the problem anyway because all avi's , etc... play fine and also audio CDs.

What's wierd is that games I have that play off DVDs work fine. This is driving me nuts. LOL! I hope someone more knowlegable than myself can help me out.

              Thanks for reading.

overboard, first of all, see post #2 in this thread, particularly the last paragraph

what happens when you play with 'medai player classic'? try it.

if still nothing, here's what you do:

uninstall all traces of the old ATI display drivers. go to http://www.ati.com, click the links that will get you to the driver download page. on that page is the ati catalyst uninstall tool. download & run it.

make sure you have the latest directx & latest graphics card (nvidia! not ati) drivers.

now try playing in media player classic.

if still nothing, open up media player classic, press 'o' on your keyboard. click 'output' on the left column, and select vmr9. click OK, exit media player. run media player, try playing a dvd.

I know I have the latest directX and nvidia drivers.
I 'll let you know. It's great to know maybe there's still hope. LOL!

anony, will it play factory movies standalone w/o the plugin?
like powerdvd, windvd which have it?

                            Bad News......

I think I followed all the steps in this thread and nothing has changed. I uninstalled every codec I had and started over. I set up media player classic also.
I set up all of these:

                            ffdshow

                            real alternative

                            quicktime alternative

media player classic - extremely stable and fast media player. best player ever.

oggDS filter - directshow filter for ogm/ogg

windows media player 10 if you wish

This step I was unsure about:

nvidia purevideo codec (you can substitute windvd/powerdvd here) -for dvd's/mpeg-2 (i use dscaler instead, IMO it beats everything else)

I have WinDVD on my system is that what you mean??

                            I also did this:

uninstall all traces of the old ATI display drivers. go to http://www.ati.com, click the links that will get you to the driver download page. on that page is the ati catalyst uninstall tool. download & run it.

now try playing in media player classic.

Don't know what else to try???

I'm trying to play Star Wars, lol. It's still choppy in media player classic no difference at all.

                            Bummed out.

                              did you do that?

so when you play with MPC, you get picture now instead of a black screen?

try this: play the dvd in MPC (media player classic). while playing, right-click the video, and select 'filters'. post here everything in that list of filters.

while the dvd is playing, press ctrl+alt+delete., click the 'performance' tab & see how high the cpu usage is.
