Player Locks Up on Imperfect Disks

I have a home audio JVC XV-N510B player. It's not low end but definitely not high end either ($120-$140). I often play rented DVDs and more often than I'd like there is a bad spot on the disk (even though I clean them all before playing) which will cause the player to lock up to the point that I have to disconnect it from the power source. I would expect that a player would show some bad video or skip ahead but not to lock up fatally.

Is this a "normal" issue with DVD players and imperfect disks?

    Welcome to the forums!

I would say that it isn't normal for that to be happening. Something is wrong with it in my opinion.

My player will sometimes skip ahead on bad discs. If a really bad area, it will freeze then shut down. You may have to clean your DVD player as a dirty optics will also shut it down.

I got a replacement disk for the one that recently locked up my player. And the new disk locked up the player in the same place! There must be something on the recording that is fatal to the player. Hard to believe......

I am wondering if it is the player?? Is it still under warranty? How old is it? Can it be returned?

It's been awhile since the last post so I'll finish it off with an update.
I have continued to use the player (usually a couple movies a week) without further problems. I am in the habit of washing the DVDs before playing them. Some of the ones from NetFlix look like they went to a party and had a very good time! But they have been playing fine.
