    Shrinking an X.mpg file

I am new to this. I hope I am following the rules.

I have created a file on my desk top by feeding in the video out and audio out from a VCR into the Composite video and audio inputs on my computer. The file is X.mpg and is 5.5GB in size. I now wish to burn this file to a DVD. I will need to shrink this file to about 4.5GB to fit the available disk space. I am hoping to use DVD Shrink 3.2 but it does not recongize the .mpg format. Any suggestions? Thanks.

you need to convert it to dvd files first in order to use shrink (which is what i would do). i like TMPGEnc but it ain't freeware, there are trials though. another is mediacoder then author.
