burning and playback problems of SL copies in PC drive.

All Single Layer copies burnt in USB drive always playback well in USB drive and standalone player now, but not on laptop’s internal PC drive.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
    <o></o>
Also, they pass the Scan disc test of CD-DVD Drive speed when done in USB drive but these same copies give damaged (yellow) and bad (red) sectors when I subject them to the same test in the PC internal drive. Consequently they also stall and freeze when played back in this drive.<o></o>
    <o></o>
Furthermore, when I try to burn Sl discs in the internal drive instead, Nero Recode2 gives an “illegal disc” error. I post copy of the log further below.<o></o>
    <o></o>
My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 5150 bought in 2003 with XP Pro. Its internal drive is a DL&SL 8x player/SL 2.4x recorder Philips. It came with Roxio software for copying which I replaced (I hope successfully but not sure) by Nero as soon as I could. I only use Verbatims for all copies now.<o></o>
    <o></o>
Any ideas out there, you forum brains? Thanks a bunch.<o></o>

that's a very olde laptop burner but newer firmware might help if it's not dying

from the numbers of firmware I would say they kept rying to get it right

    1.06 would be the latest
    Fri Apr 02, 2004 and that's ancient

Updated but I guess same problems persist.

      Thanks for your reply, Chewy.

I downloaded and installed versions 1.03 and 1.06 for my drive. I installed them one at a time starting by the eldest and rebooted after each installation. I also tested playback between installations. I haven't noticed any change when playing copies.

What should I do to find out if there's been a change or improvement somewhere? Is there anything else to be done now (aside from changing to a more modern laptop?

A cheaper solution might be to try and external drive before diving into a new laptop...as chewy stated the firmware that is available looks like they might have never got it right.

I would just save the burner for a regular reader and keep using your usb drive.

Might try some older media if you can find it.
