It doesn't look like the drive really supports those discs.

Try some decent Verbatim (MCC dye) or Taiyo Yuden ones instead.

looks like they left that mid out of the firmware

@ LIGHTNING UK! -- I've always used the Imation DVD-R discs. That machine never had a problem with that type of disc until now. I doubt the disc is the problem (also I used another computer with those discs and it always works very well).

@ Chewy -- Thanks for the input... but what do I do with it? I don't really understand what you mean.

I would have agreed with you until I purchased my last batch, 8-X.
I had to update my firmware to get them to burn correctly. I am not sure if this could be the problem, but I did note that it is burning @ 2-X. This was that I saw, normal 4-X burns on 4-X imation, then 2-X burns on new 8-X imation disk.

Imation, Memorex, whatever, means just who the buyer was for a batch of media. Your burner does not look at the top of the disk or the writting on the spindle when it tries to burn it, it looks for a mid code, then the firmware either has a write strategy for that mid code or it doesn't.

In this case the mid code was

Destination Media Type: DVD-R (Disc ID: OPTODISCR016) (Speeds: 2x)

a lesser well know 16x media

and the firmware used a generic write strategy that wouldn't work, end of story, fat lady sang, etc.

I really think this has nothing to do with the disc. I'm on another machine now, a PC. I put the same DVD media in, and here's the report ImgBurn spewed on it.

It reports correctly and shows the speeds the disc really supports. So, does anyone know what happened to the DVD-R drive on my other computer, the laptop? Or, better, what I can do to remedy it?

I think Chewy gave you the answer. Your drive does not like the disk. I understand your thought on it not being the disk, but it is a combo of the disk and your 1st drive. If you review the link Chewy gave it shows that your drive does not know how to support those disk. Maybe you should try to buy some better disk for that drive. Review list, looks like you may have better luck if you can find 4X disk.

It just seems so so strange to me that this type of disc would suddenly stop working after such a long time of flawless performance. Is there any reason why this would happen? I will try other media and see what happens, but I sorely doubt it will help.

I don't have any of those logs saved, but the above is the accurate information for the discs that it used to provide.

is that from an older burn?

did you stick in an old disk into the drive and copy that from the imgburn window

remember imation used 3 other kinds of blanks and labeled them the same as yours

Perhaps you should check the condition of your written Imations. I tried some a long time ago, burned ok but after a month they wouldn`t play, not even in the drive that burned them.

Sorry I took so long to reply, been very busy. I popped an older disc into my laptop and ImgBurn reported it as OPTODISCR008 and supported speeds of 2x, 4x. The info I gave is the report my working, no-issue computer reports the disc as having, meaning the discs are just fine and my burner on the laptop is messed, right? Oh, and all movies I burned ages ago with the laptop still work just as excellent as always. Again, thanks for all this advice everyone.

the mystery is solved, the disks changed from OPTODISCR008, which worked, to OPTODISCR016, which don't work
