    Help computer illiterate

I have managed to rip/backup several DVD's over the last few days with no problems (after reading thru these forums and posts! Thanks.) BUt when trying to backup The Illusionist to DVD I got an I/O error _what does that mean? and then had to shut down the computer to get it to unfreeze. SO I tried to use Imgburn and got the following messages...I don't know what they mean or how to fix them...any help would be appreciated. PLease remember that I don't understand much of the lingo of ripping so be gentle with your answers. THaks in advance for your help.... it's going to be impossible to tell with those blanks whether your burner is dead or just doesn't like that new of a mid code(ProdiscF02)

if it used to burn those exact same disks(same batch) then I would suspect the burner or something interfering with imgburn

anyway a 4x dvd-r burner is kind of obsolete nowdays, considering they were designed to burn media that is no longer manufactured

since your burner is so old try the newer firmware update from my link, you have nothing to lose, drive may already be dead anyway

A friend gave me the used burner last week and several blanks to use. I ran out of his blanks and bought more, then ran into problems. I will go the exact brand of disks (office depot- go figure) and see if they work. IF not I will fork over money for a new burner. ANy recommendations on something fairly reasonable (ie less then $100 for an external burner)? THanks for all the help and I'll let you know how a new burn goes tonight!

I have a dell PC. Since I don't know how to install an interanl drive and have friend that are equally computer illiterate (they think I am computer savy LOL) I was given the external drive. As far as a USB2, I am not sure what that is so I can'st say for sure if I have one. I am going to try the media first-less invasive then work my way up. The media is the only thing that I have changed becasue I was able to burn several DVD's last week: Infamous, flushed away, Crash, Babel ect. So I am hoping that the old burner just likes crappy media. BUt , would investing in a new burner speed up the burn time? Right now it takes me almost 2 hours to burn 1 DVD and thats enough to make me get a new burner.

if it takes 2 hours you must be using an older dell with usb1 and a new external one would not help

you could save your self 40-50$ buying an internal and burn at 4x in 15 minutes even on an older computer

now if the burn process was taking less than an hour you have usb2

in device manager there will be an enhanced controller listed under usb
                        if it's usb2

                        usb1 does less than 1 MB/s 4,460 seconds is a long time
                        usb2 safely does 5-6MB/s at 4X

changing a drive is fairly easy, often the hardest thing is getting the damn case open, they need cleaning out regularly anyway

just pull the old drive(it's junk anyway), check the jumper on the back,
set the new drive jumper to the same setting, put the new drive in, usually 4 small screws, hook the cables back up, test, ezypeezy

backing up a dvd is a lot more challenging in my opinion

Well THe dell is only 1.3 years old and I did find out it had a USB2 when I looked where you told me. The 2 hours is total download, encrypt, and burn time. BUT>>>>>>I got some cheap new media last night and was once again burning disks this afternoon. WHOO HOOO! And they seemed to burn much quicker. BUt, I am going to get another burner when I find a good deal on one. THANK YOU so much for you patience and walking me thru this. I am sure there will be other problems so (unfortunately lol) this is not the last you will hear from me. THanks again.
