If you are on XP, right click on My Computer, click Properties, click on Advanced tab, in the Performance click Settings, in the Performance Options window click Advanced tab, you will find Virtual Memory on the bottom click Change.
If you have multiple drives, you better set virtual memory on the drive that doesn't have windows on it. Choose Custom Size. Many people recommend setting virtual ram 1.5 of your ram. Start with that and do trial and error.

Virtual RAM is only good if you have limited Physical RAM as it serves as a back up if the Physical RAM runs out then the remaining data was written there. The downside was the access time it took the laser to access it as data was written on your hard drive disc compared to the Physical RAM. The ultimate solution was to ascertain your Physical RAM as Chewy was suggesting and if at all possible to upgrade it to your requirements. >>Right click MY Computer >Properties
