want to add subtitles to avi and burn to dvd

Ok guys, first of all nice forum, lots of really helpful info and i have managed ot progress quite a lot already - more than i could imagine considering how poor i am with this kind of stuff

So now now have a nice .avi file of a movie - no probz!!
i want to add arabic subtitles to the avi - i now have the subtitles in a *.sub format
    i have virtualdub

what do i do? from whati have read in the forums i know i need it in a ssa format (ive downloaded the filter for virtualdub)

    how do i manage this

considering my goal is to actually just get the avi with subtitles into dvd format is the an easier/quicker way to go about this? maybe just add the subtitles and avi into a program which will once converted be ready for burning to dvd as the way i see it now i will have to convert the avi with the subs first, then convert again to burn to dvd ?

    thanks for any advice

    Tp

There are many ways to skin the cat. You don't specify what the .avi has for audio.
If it's not AC3 then this guide might help:

Try DVD Flick. Put your avi into Flick. Then Edit Title. Here you will find the option of adding the sub. Then just convert to DVD.

What player are you using to play your file?
Use Media Player Classic. Go to View/Options/Subtitles--Default Style. Here change the font to any Arabic font and the character(default is ANSI) to Arabic(178).Now you should be able to see the subs correctly.

paglamon if he sets the language in DirectVobSubConfigure will he be able to hard code the subs? Seems there should be some way to encode into the DVD if he gets the subs to images.

He can hard sub the avi file in Arabic using the Textsub filter with Virtualdub.Just choose the character as Arabic(178).
