A man has got to know his limitations Chewy & mine don't extend to building my own yet. It's already built, I helped, but did not do it on my own. This is the case I was referring to with an ABIT Uguru control panel installed.

designing the system(picking out all the parts)
and then the load and debugging drivers are the hardest parts of the build
          especially with newer hardware

Page 1 of 2 - Dvd Drive Disappeared - posted in Windows Vista: I recently built a new a PC and when I did I chose the LG GSA-H55N as my one and only disk drive. I used it to install Windows but it up and disappeared at some point and I didnt notice because I dont use it much. Ive tried everything I can think of: Power - its definitely plugged in, the tray opens Data Cable - The bios still reads off the name when I boot so it must be connected Driver/Firmware - LG released a 1.05 firmware t...

Oh I know, I have been hanging out at this friend of mine who is in the business, & some of the things I have seen, let's just say it's no walk in the park. I have to admit though, I do enjoy watching & learning from the steps taken & I am not just talking about builds, but the different things that people bring in their computer for. I was there every step of the way on the build for me. So respect to the people that take care of our computers & those who do build their own, it's well deserved.

              Hi Chewy & Soup,

I was thinking about putting together a Desktop for home use ... since my at-home is nagging me.

So, am I to understand it would much easier just to buy a Unit from let's say Dell online, or Fry's, or Best Buy, or costco ...

The only yhing I don't like about Dell is the darn small boxes and no longer offer XP ... so I am stuck with Vista.

Also like Soup's Big Box so I can add 2 of my burners in it for direct burning ...

Q: Also, isn't cheaper if you build your own box ... get more bang for the dollar ... when youy pick your components on sale or with rebates!?!?

              Thanks,

              G!

I would never suggest going online or Big Box. If you can building it yourself would be the best way to go, but there are pitfalls as Chewy has mentioned. Now with both of these options you don't really have anybody to go back to. If anything goes wrong, sure the Big Box say they have support, but I have read too many stories were people try to get that support & are left high & dry. Now if it is bad enough, they will send it away, but the time it is away doesn't get added on to your warranty. Of course if you do it yourself, you only have you to go back to. I got really lucky, the local outfit that I bought my first from had somebody that came to work for them who has helped me upgrade to where I am now & I trust him implicilitly, ( he is now a good friend). Service whenever necessary & just first class treatment all the way around. The thing that drew me to them in the first place, first question they asked my wife & myself was, "what do you want to do with this computer?" Of course a lot has changed since they asked that first question, but what it meant to me at the time, we are not going to sell you a whole bunch of stuff that you don't need just to make money. IMHO try your hardest to find a local business & check them out, ask if you can talk to a couple of people that they have sold computers to. But I ramble.

@gonwk, the case of mine right now is holding 4 x optical drives & 4 x hard drives, but if you take the side of you have lots of room to work inside & it is as cool as a cucumber, even although I didn't put the eight fans that you can fit in it.

It is not that hard to put the hardware in but as Chewy said it is a pia when you have driver issues. Imho you do get better computer when you put it together from parts.
