Microsoft May Announce Xbox 360 Blu-Ray Monday

A tipster claims Microsoft is planning to upstage WWDC by announcing a Blu-Ray Xbox 360.

It better be true this time, or I'm not posting on this topic again, even if it becomes true.

Microsoft is shooting down the latest rumor that it will introduce an XBox 360 video game console that includes a Blu-ray player.

The long-repeated rumor surfaced again over the weekend when the web site Crunch Gear reported that a "tipster" informed it that Microsoft would unveil the Blu-ray equipped XBox today.

    -- snip --

However, in an interview yesterday with the San Francisco Chronicle, Microsoft's Robbie Bach denied the company is preparing a Blu-equipped XBox.

Bach, the president of Microsoft's entertainment and devices division, added that Blu-ray high-def disc has yet to perform well at retail.

Another false rumour? Where do all these come from? That's the fifth or sixth this year since HD DVD's fall, somebody must be pushing for this for some reason.

If whomever is pushing for this mainly wants the act of MS producing Blu-ray hardware as the ultimate "har har, I win, I told you so" type of statement for Blu-ray, then the rumours are probably fueled by Blu-ray/PS3 fanbois.

Or it could be because the Blu-ray people are desperate to get the most popular console in the US to help their cause. So it's the Blu-ray people pushing for this. I don't think this is the case because according to stats, while the HD DVD add-on drive was the most popular accessory for the 360, it only managed to sell 200,000 units, which is below the number of PS3's that sell per month!

Or if the 360 has Blu-ray just like the PS3, then it makes the 360 look even worse when compared directly (certainly the 360 as a Blu-ray player won't be as cool/quiet/stylish as the PS3 as a Blu-ray player). Right now, it's more like comparing apples and oranges, since MS is aiming at a different type of buyer (the gamer, who don't care about using consoles to play movies). Or perhaps the rumours exist to make people aware of the fact that the 360 doesn't have Blu-ray capabilitites. If this is the case, then it's Sony doing it.

Or the story could be real
