    three types i say...
1: good dv cams are now cheap, they use digital small tapes to record digital video. u need a computer to make dvd out of them or if u want to edit also in between [time consuming]. or use standalone dvd recorder but almost zero editing option.

2: cams with mini dvd-r's are also common now and cheap too. u endup with a dvd instantly to watch on ur dvd player. very little editing options in camera though. time savers if u dont edit much of ur work.

3: harddisk/flash cams, pretty new but have almost passed their first generation so works fine. little expensive then other two. u endup with mpeg file that u can transfer to computer and burn dvd. total time editing+dvd will be shorter then dv cause u already have dvd complient file in ur hand.

now if u have money u can get High Definition, will be expensive though...
Seems like as soon you buy somehing, v. 2 comes out 1.5 times as fast!..!

      Good advice atfish.
I find my SONY-HC96 MiniDV cam pretty good for standard home/vacation videos. I prefer MiniDV because I do quite a bit of editing. And as they say, DV is better editable than MPEG.

All I can say is, avoid JVC. JVC are mostly good with other things but I've tried loads of their camcorders and got dissapointed with them. They always give software made by Cyberlink and Cyberlink are useless. I just bought another JVC camcorder with big regrets and the Cyberlink software is all the more worse. It acts like it has a mind of its own. Also, my camcorder has some strange things. It has no light, no remote control supplied (with no remote control sensor so that I can't buy a remote control), the wind cutter doesn't work and the different types of filming are crap. I tried Classic Filming (where I hoped to film with a better style to rip to my PC better without interlacement) and the picture quality is like VHS and mine is a camcorder with a hard drive. When I have the filming effect off, it films in DVD quality (but I have to get rid of interlacement before burning to DVD) but Classic Filming that messes things to VHS quality is dumb and I thought Classic Filming would be the best. JVC suck. Now the rubber cover over the USB socket broke off and now I have to get that fixed. I only got this camcorder under a week ago.
