My Internal DVD Burner Not Always Working

My DVD burner in my laptop doesn't always read DVD discs. One day it doesn't, then it does, then it doesn't. What is going on with it? Sometimes a DVD disc just spins non-stop and the burner makes a grinding sound and other times when that happens, it stops spinning and when I try and play the DVD my laptop indicates there's no disc inserted. Before I know it, it's working again and then it isn't.

What can I do to fix this?

    Many thanks.

I think that the only way to fix the drive is to replace the drive. It sounds like there is a hardware issue with the drive. Or the possibility that there could be a problem with the laptop itself. But odds are that it is the drive. It is hard to tell without being able to see the laptop.
