Need Help Desperately - Illegal Disc Error with Nero and OTHER Programs

    Hello,

I recently sent my laptop in for repair and when it came back, the OS had been restored and suddenly, I could not burn DVDs. I can still burn CDs, but not DVD-R. I installed three different programs including Nero and SonicNow, but none work, for data and video.

Here is my log. I have spent hours trying to get help but nothing seems to work.

PLEASE Help! I plead with you!

The HP chat technicians have been trying to have but have told me to bring it back to the store for repairs. I am so frustrated because the problem was because it was brought back to the store for repairs. They reinstalled the OS and now it won't burn DVD discs. I agree the problem is not with the software or the discs, but with the firmware or the drive itself.

The manufacturer latest release shows 2.4. My version is 2.81. It seems to be the latest so I'm not sure what could be wrong.

you can't go on the assumption that yours is a later frimware, been there and done that, it's a rarer oem version and probably bad

try to manually find the firmware as a driver for your model

          Hi Chewy,

Thank you so much for the replies - it is a wonderful forum you have here. I checked on the NEC site and the last firmware version they have is 2.24. Mine reads as 2.81 - which I have heard sometimes NEC renames.

The Compaq site has a firmware update but it's for the wrong drive. I'm so upset at Future Shop right now for returning my laptop in disfunctional form!

well your burner is trying to burn dvd-r's at a dvd+r speed only, that's
            bad bad bad

            I'd ask for a 6550 under warranty

              Hello Chewy,

Thank you again. What is the DVD + speed? It was working perfect before the OS restore but not anymore.

Has the OS restore done something to it? They did not replace the drive or anything. Are the discs I purchased defective or is it a hardware problem? I don't understand why the burner would try to burn at a speed different from before?

              Thank you for your assistance!

the disks(sony dvd-r 16x) are new from last summer, since compaq/HP oem'd your burner it's up to them to support newer media with firmware upgrades.

the 2.4 burn speed is only for dvd+r media

Thank you again Chewy for your incredible patience and insight.

I've used the Sony DVD-R before but I can't remember what speed it was. It may have been 16x as well, but it could have also been 8x. The laptop is only a year old and I purchased the discs around that time.

I am chatting with a HP technician now to see if they can get me a firmware update because I really suspect it is a firmware problem, and possibly due to a new discs. I wish I had an older disc to try.

What speed is the DVD-R supposed to burn at? Does this mean that it was trying to burn at DVD+R speed because it didn't recognize the DVD-R? All the programs I used rejected the disc as being "illegal" or "layer not supported". I'm curious to learn more about this disc burning speed no-no, so I can explain it to the technicians (who don't seem to know much).

look back at the sony disks from last year, are they the same?
put a disk in and the nero info tool should give you the mid code

accepted burn speed for -R media is 2x,4x,8x etc
                    not 2.4

I will check the discs once I get home - at least I am getting somewhere with this problem, thanks to your help. Why is it that technicians aren't more like you?

Why would the burner try to burn the disc at the wrong speed? That sounds like a serious problem.

The HP Chat technician is asking me whether I have tried other discs. That's not really the problem. Sigh.

if slower older disks worked then it would have to be the firmware, if they had problems then I would suspect the burner

Well, firmware problem or not, HP has graciously decided to send me a new burner under warranty. I am not sure if it will be a new version or not, but at least they are doing something.

They are also offering to send a prepaid box to send the defective one back too.

The only thing is I have to remove and install the drive myself - scary! All this talk of electromagnetic field worries me a bit. I don't want to zap anything.

But not a bad solution? I wonder if the firmware problem will still persist with the new drive?

I will bet you 3-1 that you won't get the same drive back, let's hope it's a
real nec, not an oem tho. The new drive should come with directions for the swap out, gosh I hate laptops.

I hope so too Chewy. This HP technician was fricking awesome. I have to say, the drive swap was due to your help, I think. I mentioned that the newer media wasn't being supported, needed new firmware, etc. I really hope it's not an OEM either (wow, I am learning a lot of new terms with this mess).

She sent me a manual for the swap and it looks pretty easy, it's the environment stuff that gets me worried but it is better than dealing with the store. Their service warranty sucks. They sent it back with this problem (that didn't exist anymore) and then refused to pick it up and courier it back for repairs. I ended up yelling at them last night and they agreed to a one way courier, but I will try this drive swap first to see if it works.

I assume firmware won't be a problem with a new drive, but what do I know? Nothing!

I also hate laptops. I love my Desktop. The sad thing is it has no DVD burner, which is why I am trying to use this one (my friend is out of the country for a year). Bah!
