Windows Media Player 7.1 and DIVX 5

Hi, let me begin by saying that I have absolutely no problems with using the newest divx codec and windows media player 7.1.
That is on my <u>other</u> system!!
On this computer, I have an AMD ATHLON 650, windows 98 se,
256 mb ram ,Nvidia tnt2 video card.
I just reformated the hard drive and I now have just windows media player 7.1 installed--no codecs yet.
So in what order should I install these codecs on this machine?
The Divx 5 one first and THEN the NIMO CODEC PACK? Or the Nimo only??

I want to watch avis with media player like my other machine does with no problems at all.

This is what I usually do:
1. Install Nimo/Tsunami (making sure that MS MPEG4 V2 and 3.11 are ticked)
2. Install DivX 5
3. Replace the 3.11 .ax files with the Tsunami-modified ones (so as to prevent DivX 5 from automatically playing 3.11 contents)

By the way, you might want to try the more reliable and configurable WMP 6.4 (run "mplayer2.exe" from the Run command). See which player you like better. The general consensus here leans towards WMP 6.4 though.

Thanks for the advice. My only question is on the last part about replacing the "ax" file. How do I get that from Tsunami?

In most, if not all, it should be alright.

UncasMS reported a few problems with DivX 5 decoding 3.11 contents. For me, I prefer DivX 5 decoding 5.x contents, and DivX 3.11 decoding 3.11 contents. After all, I am amongst the many people who still like DivX 3.11 and prefer the same codec to decode its own content.

Does it matter that the file that the thread led me to is called
divx_c32.ax and not "3.11 .ax"?
I am ready to try this, so if you don't mind answering this one last question(I Hope!), I will be forever grateful!!

Don't worry about it. Follow exactly as instructed in the thread. It works fine for me and I don't see any reason why it shouldn't with you.
