It IS possible to do irreparable damage to a CD burner that isn't capable of overburning, by attempting to overburn...

no it is capable of overburning (acer 24x10x40) i made a couple of cds before this that had 702 - 708 mb data. the one that went wrong was suppose to have a 728 mb

If it is capable of overburning and you merely received an error message that the file was too large to burn, that wouldn't have caused any damage.

I'd suggest you spend about $10US for a Maxell DVD/CD cleaning disk - and run it for two minutes on your drive. If you're fortunate, this will resolve your proble. If it doesn't, chances are your laser is out alignment - in which case itwill probably be less costly to buy a new drive, rather than repair this one...

(By the way, were the other files 702MB and 708MB, or 702,000Bytes and 708,000bytes - which are each less than 700MB?

            "no they were mb 702,000kb"

As I was trying to express (apparently unsuccessfully), since there are 1,024 Kilobytes in a Megabyte, 702,000Kb equals only 685.5 Megabytes - and 708,000Kb equals only 691.4 Megabytes.

            (702Mb=718,848Kb)

Therefore, I'm once again speculating that you've not previously successfully used overburn with your CD burner - besides, if you're using NERO (and probably most other burning software), a message would appear advising you that overburning is necessary...

no it's my mistake i didn't wrote it well
i didn't understand you well the first time because you wrote 702,000bytes instead of kilobytes
anyway whenever i atempted overburn nero always asked me if i wanted to use overburn so it's not 702,000 but 718,848kb and more
