    AVI Synth / MPEG2 > 4GB / Etc.

    Howdy folks--here's the deal.
We've got a buttload of VHS tapes we send out to distance students. We've been encoding them to AVI (MPEG4v2) format.

Here's the problem: We're using a DVCII (dazzle) capture card to capture from the VCR. This gives us files about 4 GB for a 70 min video. Files are in MPEG2 format at a fairly high bitrate.

    Virtual Dub can't open MPEG2.

AVI Synth allows us to open MPEG2 in virtual dub, however it has following drawbacks.
v .03 = Horrible quality. Looks like some kind of screwy interlacing.

    v 1.0b3 = no sound.

ULead Video Studio can't open MPEG2 files > 4 GB or perhaps 70 mintues (we're not sure which is actual barrier). (We previously use UVS to encode shorter videos).

Soooo. Does anyone know a good way to encode these 4GB+ MPEG2 video files (with sound)? Again, the target is AVI format with MPEG4v2 codec (mp3 sound).

    TIA!

Flask refuses to open a .mpg file. It wants a stream, not a file.
There may be a way to make a file look like a stream to it, but I haven't found it. Anyone know a way?

if your capture tool didnt stick to the openDML rules, your avi cannot be handled at all!

Errmm-- The link you sent me to was for AVI files > 4 GB.
I've got a .mpg (MPEG2) file >4GB that I want to CONVERT to an AVI file.

Did you mean to send me a different link?
Media Player can play the file fine.
In fact XMpeg seems to be able to open it but I get a "Error 100" when I try to encode it.

mpeg4 v2 is the target compression.
Getting there from mpeg2 is the problem. =(
