a) open the files in GSpot (not hard to find, just give this word to google

) and post what information this brings up

b) what codecs do you have installed ?

Wow.... I'm sorta a newbie at analysing these things and WOW, that GSpot is AWESOME!!! Exactly what I've been looking for forever!

Ok, let's see how we can tackle this problem.

I guess this sould be the most ideal sequence of actions to get rid of your problem.

hi !

i have the same kind of problem than the original poster:

i used GSpot, who tells me i have the codecs needed to run my file. when i try rendering, tho, it fails, and the error code is the one the original poster gave.

i tried your method (using tsunami etc) but it still doesn't work. any other idea ? any need of further info ? let me know

i found tsunami, but it didn't work. i tried with ffdshow too, and the problem is the same. GSpot says it should work, but rendering doesn't, and i get the 0x80040111:[unknown] thing.

If your "problem" file is one that you've downloaded, it's most probably a fake file...

i've thought about that too. but in GSpot, the file is recognized as a "valid" AVI file. i dl'ed it on eMule, and iirc, many people had the file, so i think it is not a fake. but i can't be sure, of course ^^

In addition to that I would recommend also that you use the small
tsunami filterpack 3.9.6 ... also available at the site of Uncas...
it will install the FFdshow codec as well.....
for Divx decoding I would still recommend the gainbundle of Divx 5.1 pro....... make sure that you tell ffdshow not to decode divx movies...... and I forgot.... remove the big tsunami filterpack before you install the small one.....

as a very good player I recommend the freeware tool BS Player
wich can be obtained at softwaresection of www.divx-digest.com

It's a compatibility problem, due to some version of Windows Xp Pro (especially if the service pack 1 is installed). Probably in the future many users will get into this error.

I've found that the problem seems to arise as a consequence to codec conflicts, in particular between 16bit and 32bit codec.

I've killed these codecs with Codec Sniper, and now every player seems to be able to play any video file without any problem.

However, it's interesting that while Windows Media Player and other similar software (BSplayer, Viplay,...) were unable to play some avi, the Divx Player (which comes with the original divx codec pack) could, even if with some errors and collateral problems. Why? I think all the most common players use the basic directshow commands, which exactly are the responsible of the compatibily error. Somehow, the Divx Player uses different algorithms.
