Ext. FireWire Drive- slow record speed

I have a Plextor-504UF External DVD+R drive which is supposed to be able to record at 4X on DVD+R Discs. The most I can seem to get out of it is 2.4X. I have a TDK CDR Drive and a Pioneer DVD-ROM drive that are internal, and the Plextor is connected via FireWire. I've tried removing the IDE drivers and rebooting which was a fix I saw in another post, no luck.

I realize that there is quite a few existing posts on this issue already, but I couldn't find one that applied to external Firewire Drives.

Remove one of the IDE drive, clear your CMOS, and restart

I appreciate your reply, however, I took the external 504UF Plextor back and for less money got the internal Plextor 708A which I LOVE
