Default Burning Speed Using Sonic Recordnow!

    Hey all and merry christmas.

I am having some trouble with my internal burner, for a while it was taking 40 mins to burn, and about and hour through DVD shrink, and then for a while it was taking half or less time. Now it has reverted back to the old slow time, and I was wondering if anyone would have a possible solution? My DVD burner is a 4x.

    Thanks in advance

Are your disks rated at 4x? Have set the burn speed to 4x in the burning software? What speed is reported when burning?

yep they are 4x, and the speed is set to 4 speed. I dont think there is any reported speed at the time of burning. The strange thing is, it was taking ages originally, then one day last week the whole CD/DVD drive was undetectable by the computer, so I restarted it, and then it was burning at the speed it should (half the original speed.) Now its back to its old self slow as a snail !

Have you got DMA enabled for all your drives?
Which burning software are you using?

What does Nero report as the burn speed, is it 4x even though in reality it is taking longer and how long does it actually take to burn the disk?

Download and run this Registry hack for Nero: http://www.multivers.tk/ it will show the true burning speed.

What do you mean it is taking an hour through DVD shrink?
Are you saying DVDshrink is taking longer now to re-encode? How long is it taking and how long did it take before?

Hey Ashy, I have removed nero from my computer.

Dvd Shrink used to, and now takes around an hour to encode. For about a week it took around half this time.

The same goes for Sonic Recordnow, which now takes around 40 minutes, where as during that week, it took around 15-20 minutes!

Could it be a HDD problem, as I only have 20gb HDD.

    Thanks very much!

To me this does seem like a HDD problem. It seems like the data is not being passed to the burner fast enough. Are you absolutely sure DMA is enabled for the HDD and your burner.

    What OS are you using?

I may have selected the wrong device at the device manager. Under IDE ADA/ADApi controllers I select the Primary IDE Channel, then properties and under advanced settings, it says that Device 0 and Device 1 Transfer mode IDE if available , but then under current transfer mode on Device 0 it states PIO Mode ??
    Im using Windows XP.

Just Checked out the Secondry IDE Channel and that has a Current Transfer mode of ULTRA DMA mode 5.

I have no Idea weather the Burner is linked to the Secondary or Primary IDE Channel!

The primary IDE channel should have your HDD connected and device 0 will be your HDD.
It is running in PIO mode which is likely why you have this pro blem. You need to have the drive in DMA mode.

Right click on the Primary IDE channel under ATA/ATAPI controllers in device manager then select uninstall from the menu then reboot.

This should force windows to re-install the drivers for the HDD and reset it to DMA.

    Let me know the results.

You have your configuration for your drives all wrong.
Only hard drives can use ULTRA DMA 5, so you have your hard drive attached to the wrong channel.
You need to swap the cables over.

    Use this configuration:

    HDD - Primary IDE channel
DVDRW - Slave on Primary IDE channel
DVDROM - Master on Secondary IDE channel.

If you don't have a DVDROM then connect your DVDRW to the Secondary IDE as a Master

It would help if you download 'Nero info tool' then run the program and click the 'Configuration tab' then report the results here.

Damn its come back as PIO mode only, on Device 0. You can still select IDE if available as you could before. Is there anyway around this?

The Ultra DMA is under the Secondary IDE Channel Device O. This is wierd because thats how it came to me from the manufacturer. and Its a laptop so that makes it so hard for me to modify internally.
