DVD to DVD coping?

I am new here but maybe someone can answer my question.
I am very new to DVD burning and such. I just got a new DVD burner and was wondering, is it possible to burn a DVD movie onto a blank DVD cd? straight through? IF it is possible which program would I use and how would I have to get past the copyright?
