    Non-US ASCII characters in Subtitles

    Hi all!
Just recently started Xvid'izing my movies and found out that my .srt files which contain Norwegian characters like æ, ø and å don't display correctly on my Xbox (using XBMP 2.4).

WMP and BSPlayer have no qualms about the non-US characters... Even tried some ampersand encoding (a lá HTML). Still no use.

Anyone now how to resolve this? Is this a limitation of the the Xbox and/or XBMP?

    Is this even Xvid-forum related....?

I found the solution. This is just an FYI for anyone faced with the same problem.

    1) This isn't an Xvid problem.
    2) XBMP 2.x can be forced to use a different character set. (Natively it uses UTF-8...) For norwegian characters I chose to use ISO-8859-1

Here's a clip on how to do it:
Getting subtitles in any language to work for XBMP 2.x
(Supported in the code since 22/01-2003 and on)
Thx goto Feng ZHOU (Zfff) for this GREAT patch!!!!

    1. Modify your config.xml file in your Xbox Media Player
directory on Xbox. Add one line right after the "language" entry,

    <subtitleencoding>UTF-8</subtitleencoding>

"UTF-8" should be replaced with the encoding of your
subtitle file (e.g. GBK for Simplified Chinese subtitles,
BIG5 for Traditional Chinese ones). A list of all
    supported encodings is available at

    2. Choose a TTF font from your Windows font directory
(C:\Windows\fonts) that can display your language.
Rename it to subtitle-font.ttf and upload it to your
    XBMP\Media\ directory.

    3. enjoy!

    Note!
Info on how to submit fonts to the XBMP Project is available
on the FAQ & Contribute sections of www.xboxmediaplayer.com
If we get enough language fonts in we might consider adding
switching fonts from GUI (PS! We use Tahoma as the default).

    [end clip]

There's also another reference that tells how to do it the hard way.

Hope someone else finds this helpful!
