NEC 1100A burner

My husband purchased a Dell 8300 with a DVD burner for me at Christmas. I bought ValueDisc DVD+rs and they worked great. I can't find them again and my burner only works once in a while. It will only recognize RWs. I have used TDk, Memorex, Fuji,CompuUSA. Dell kept telling me it was a software problem; I don't think so. They replaced the burner with the same kind. Exact same problem! Anyone have any thoughts on how to solve my burner problems, Please?
