    Conversion/Sound Problems

Trying to convert MPEG 1/2 to DivX avi, using FlaskMPEG (0.54 or 0.6) or VirtualDub. The video converts fine (apart from being badly ripped, the files are recorded using PowerVCR 3.0 Deluxe from TV, reception good), but the sound is awful, it either is broken and/or sounds like it is underwater. Got vast numbers of codecs. Using WinXP, Videologic SonicFury Sound Card. Any suggestions?

What is the sound quality of the original MPEG video?

What format are you converting it to?

Was the QUALITY of the original file's audio good or not?

Original quality was fine. Very good in fact.

There's is nothing inherent in either VirtualDub or Flask v.0.594 that would corrupt the sound that way. I can, therefore, only surmise that there's a problem with the MP3 codec. I'd suggest that you unistall that codec and download and install a frsh version of the Radium MP3 codec.

Some information about VirtualDub I discovered while increasing volume in DivX movies _ If you are re-encoding MP3 and actually lower the bitrate in the process _ The resultant sound is not as good as _ slightly distorted than the original. Re-encoding at the same bitrate _ as in simply increasing the volume works fine. Maybe your problem is similar in so far as you are downgrading the bitrate. Worth a try?

              Cheers
