    nec nd-1300a DVD-R burning problem

    Hello.

Wondering if you have any insights on this.

    Hardware:NEC nd-1300a "box" version (true NEC--not OEM).
    OS:WinXP Pro sp1
Burning software: Sony DVD Architect 1.0d & Roxio Creator Classic 6.1.1.7

    Media:
Memorex DVD-R 4x (purple dye) Verbatim DVD-R 4x (purple dye)
    TDK DVD-R 4x (purple dye)

It's worked okay since I've gotten it--kinda picky on what it would read/burn for CD's (even commercial CD's)--but was fine for DVD burning until now.

I had been using the Memorex for months with NO coasters. 5 days ago, I successfully burned a data disc.

2 days ago, successfully burned a video project on Verbatim media.

Last night I tried burning the same video project on the same Verbatim media, and it only got past the "Lead-in" burn, then it hung forever at the Track burn stage. Then it gave me the following error (in Sony DVD Architect 1.0d):
    'SFMMCX'-(17)
    'atapi'-(1)
    -'_NEC DVD_RW ND-1300A 1.0B'-(0)
    Module sfmmcx.cpp Line 1682
    An illegal request was received.
The disc can't be written. It is an incompatible format.

    Status: 00020202
    Command: 2a 00 00 00 12 40 00 00 20 00
    Sense: 05 30 05
    Info: 00 00 00 00
    Specific: 00 00 00
    Extra: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
    ---------------
In Roxio, it would burn the lead-in just fine also, but as soon as it started on the Track burning phase, it would hang and eventually give a similar error about he disc being an incompatible format.

    I tried a Memorex disc--same thing.

I updated firmware from 1.08 (original) to 1.0B (official)--no change.

    I tried TDK 4x media today--same thing.

The Nero info tool and confirmed it's recognizing the media as blank DVD-R.

It burns CD-R's as it always has.

I've tried everything I can think of, short of taking it apart to check the laser lense (which I DO NOT want to attempt). I don't think it's a media issue, because the same media worked fine just a couple days ago.

Anything else you can think of?

    Thanks in advance.

Have you checked out if DMA is still enabled? http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=101616

It's using PIO mode, but it's always worked before.

Turns out it started working again on it's own.

I found I have to re-seat the disc (open & reclose the drive).

It's still only burning at 2x (a 4x drive), but better than nothing at this point.

      Thanks.
