Help... Need realy big hammer to fix this

Hello all. I’m hoping someone can help me shed some light on this.
I hope below is enough info for someone to help.

    History
    I had a BenQ 822 burner.
It worked for awhile then started making coasters 1 out of 5 DVDs failed during burn
Tried a bunch of things, DMA, slower burns, Different media etc. Same intermittent errors.
I then borrowed a friends BenQ 1610 burner. Was able to burn 15 DVDs ok.
I then shipped my old BENQ 822 back for repair.
BenQ shipped me a new a new 1620. Was very happy about that. (I thought)
I started using the 1620 and now I get 1good burn out of 5 bad burns.
Started reading a lot of things out there and not sure what causing my errors.

What I have verified so far

Remember fails are not consistent. Some burn and verify ok then it fails on others

DMA is turned on for all devices.
    Running Nero 6.3.1.20
    Install Adaptec aspi_471a2.exe
BenQ firmware is flashed to latest version B7U9
Check power supply voltage using Asus mother board tools sampled every 1 second. No major fluctuations in graph even at the time of a failed burn
    Screen savers turned off
    Power management turned off
I’m not running anything or using PC while burn is in process
Core applications are only running Virus, services, etc
    Boot drive has 5GB free
Data drive has 20 GB free
I make sure DVD media is finger print free and dust free. Always covered back up
    Everything is room temperature
Memory use is about 79 %
Media being backed up is DVD movie (backup) from DVDshink
Fails occur when DVDshink trries to plug in with Nero to do burn and also fails even when DVDshrink is closed and only using NERO
Not using NERO smart start or the Wizard
Ran defrag on all hard drives
Log files almost always look the same. “Write error”
Never buffer over runs or underruns
Last BenQ drive 822 had a few “Session fixation errors”
PC seems pretty stable never a blue screen. Hangs once ever 6 months or so. PC runs 24 hours a day.
I reboot it every once and a while especially after some failed burns
    Running as the administrator
Ran spybot to check and clean adware/spyware. PC apears to be clean.
PC appears to be virus free.
Not running any fancy services or devices in memory that I’m aware of.
Doesn’t seem to matter if Booktype/bitsetting is turned on or off

    Other DVD software installed
FYI…Sonic is also installed (came with BenQ drive)
    InterVideo WinDVD 4
Ulead DVD player and MovieFactory 3 Disc Creator
    DvdInfo
    DVD Identifier

    Burn setup
    Running Windows 2000 P4 1.8mhz, 256mb
IDE1 master 40GB HD bootdrive IDE
    IDE1 slave toshiba DVD-ROM drive
IDE2 master 80GB HD datadrive IDE
    IDE2 slave BenQ 1620
Using 80 wire IDE ribbon cables and drives are NOT jumpered using CSEL

Windows, Nero, Windows swap file running from IDE1
Nero coping data from IDE2 master drive to IDE2 slave DVD burner

    Other info
I have not reloaded Nero or any other software yet because some burns work
Some burns fail right off the start and other 3 min to 5 mins into a burn
Some disks pass the burn but fail the verify

Tried different media and recorded at faster and slower speeds 2.4, 4, 8, 12. All of these fail at some point
    BenQ +R 8x
Maxell –R 4x (made in Japan)
    Verbatim –RW 2.4x
    Generis –R Onitec 4x
    Memorex –R 4x

Had one successful burn using BenQ 8x media burnt @ 12x and verified ok still (go figure)

    Disk quality and focus check
    Ran BenQs Qscan tool
Did some sample tests on different media. Qscan says it passes ok.
Maxell looked to have a very good Qscan and still failed.

Things I think I should try next
Sonic is also installed (came with BenQ drive) get rid of it
Run scan disk (just realized I should do this while writing this)
Open case and verify all cables and jumpers are set correctly again. Reseat all cables
Find a program to see what is running and what tasks are occuring burning the moment a failed burn occurs (any ideas on some software that will track what is running and when?)
    Uninstall everything then reinstall
    Look for Nero upgrade
    Upgrade to XP
    Try burner in different PC
Take really big hammer to BenQ drive
Go to Home Depot and get bigger hammer for PC

So far I have saved 11 log files. All pretty much look the same.
    Here is a typical one

I found this like for error codes but how do I find the matching error code in the log file?

I will reply with the log file

      1. Update Nero - http://www.nero.com/en/nero-up.php (or better yet, burn with DVD Decrypter).

      2. Media Specific [16..63]:
      00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 - 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................
      00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 - 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................
      00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 - 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ................

Blanks are not being recognised. You may need to try a different media (I know Maxell are good but the fact is your burner is not recognising them and your firmware is already up to date). See here for media that is supported by your burner.

      3. Book Type request: DVD-ROM
Drive doesn't support changing Book Type for DVD-R

This is a big no no. DO NOT change the bookmark for -R.

Read the Golden rules of burning in my sig.

You should only use genuine Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden media. Many thanks to www.pcx.com.au for their supply and great service.

        Thanks.
Just read some of you sigs links last night after posting the above.
I will try turning off bit setting for -R disks

Funny Just bought the Maxell media last night @ bestbuy and the burner does not recognize it.

How do I get the Nero error coeds to make what was posted in the link above.

What I really want to do is figure out what is causing the error (ger error code) so I can fix the root cause. Randomly upgrading and flashing

I'm thinking I have maybe 3 issues occurring at once making it looking like a bigger issue.

        1 Some bad media
        2 Bitsetting issue
        3 unknown yet
        etc
        .....

Something occurs to me. I'm sure others have had success with it but you have a hard drive and a CD/DVD device per channel?
I'd aim for hard drives together on Primary and CD/DVD on the secondary channel with the superior Benq as master.
Early CD writers were finicky about channels and master/slave .. maybe the Benq is too?
This isn't a learning curve ... this is b****y mountaineering!

            New info

Ok this is what I have done so far.

Bought a second new BenQ1620 (to role out bad hardware)
Installed it in my PC to replace my old 1620
Flashed it to the newest Firmware (B7U9 I think it was)
            Rebooted
Qscaned Maxell media first. Very smooth graph. Looks very good
Failed burn twice @ speed 4x on Maxell 4x -R media (Made in Japan)
Looks as if its my setup now and not bad BenQ hardware

            Next I did
Uninstalled all DVD software (Sonic , Nero)
Scan disk all drives (defrag was done last week)
            Power off PC
Opened case pulled out all IDE devices

Re-setup IDE device in this config
Re-seated all IDE 80 wire cables (blue on MB, Black on master, Grey on slave)
Verified all jumpers where set to master or slave

            IDE0
            20GB boot master
            80GB Slave

            IDE1
            BenQ 1620 master
            Toshiba DVD

After bootup verified all drive where running in DMA mode (2000 detected Ultra DMA)
Reinstalled Nero6 Ultra Ed. from CD. Used new Serial #
Only installed the Nero burner software. Did not install the other junk
Download Nero upgrade Pack 1 and 2
Upgraded Nero to the newest version (i think it was6.6) Upgrade pack #2did not apply (because I did not installed everything from the CD)
            Reinstalled adaptec aspi_471a2.exe
            Rebooted
Tried burning the Maxell -R 4x media again @ 4x ....FAIL 2 mins in
Tried BenQ 8x media +R @ 8x write....PASS!!! and Nero verify passed as well (I know its not the best test but I figure if it does not pass that then the burn most likely is bad anyway)

These burns are just not consitant in my rig.

            Any help please????

            My next steps
Try the BenQ 1620 in my old PC Celeron 667 running XP
Buy more different types of media to test with to make shiny little coasters (at least my hanging mobile will then stretch to about 12 long if I do)
Flash the Motherboard BIOS to a newer level
Upgrade to XP on main PC
Save myself the hassle and sell the BENQ and go out and by a NEC or something else for 85 bucks
Call BenQ harass them for answers

I've figured out haw to get the Error Codes from the Nero logs and compare them with the Chart posted out there however the chart for my error says "Write error". Thats helpfull!

            Any help please????

            Below is another log

As I said before, those little 00s mean it don't like the media - even with the firmware up to date. Maxell is great stuff for burners that like it - your's doesn't. Find new media!!! The Benq media seems to work - if your players like it, then stick with it.

And again, find a way to turn that bookmarking off for -R disks.

A "write error" is usually associated with DMA being off. Not the case here.

                Regards

Not sure why this keeps getting put here.
I set the bit setting back to not use -ROM and on write all +Rs as +R's
I verified this 3 times. using two differnet tools.

I will have to check Nero bit setting tool. (Where ever that is. I will find it)

A "write error" is usually associated with DMA being off. Not the case here.

I wish there was something that would tell me what cause the Write error. PC freezes, out of data, focus error, low power loss, error between the key board and chair (I guess we all would want to know)

                  Cheers..

You got it - keyboard is USB2 and the chair is USB1! LOL
But seriously, how are you getting on with ReWritables? Saves an awful lot of coasters usually.
This isn't a learning curve ... this is b****y mountaineering!

See here for media that has worked (and failed) with your burner.

Note: Benq features heavily - surprise surprise! Also, notre when you buy, don't buy the brand, buy the media code (the one in brackets).

                        Regards

                          FYI

I have had 8 good burns in a row with the below meda.

I'm runing a nero error checks on them and I'm getting "Quality Scores" of 93 % and above. One was 100%. Seems real good now.

                          One very odd thing though.
My PC just rebooted all by itself when burning DVD#5
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000050 (0xb405c714, 0x00000000, 0xbb2c5ca7, 0x00000000). Microsoft Windows 2000 [v15.2195]. A dump was saved in: C:\WINNT\Minidump\Mini041805-01.dmp.
I'm still looking into why. Got a book @ work to debug these.

I also just added another 256 DDR ram from ICCT before burn #1
Also flashed it to B7V9 released 3 days ago I think

                          Cheers.....

The main problem is BenQ. I had a external Burner, that did the same thing. I swapped it out with a Lite-On, and never had problems like that again!!

Anything that is not 100% can be considered a bad burn. There is a possible CRC error.

I know many folks who just throw anything out if it's not all green.
