    Hopeless AVI problem

    Howdy all,

I have a both a 350mb & 700mB AVI (different downloads of the same TV show) that play out of sync. They seem to jump around, so if i play from anywhere in the movie it will sometimes be right, then video will fall behind soon after. I have ran the AVI's through GSpot, it says i have 4 compatible codecs. It says "File length correct", also The DirectShow Render says the Video Src Type is "4cc: XVID" & audio on one is "MPEGLAYER3 (MP3) (0x0055)", & on the other "AC3 (0x2000)".
I have ran Sherlock, & found the following codecs to be installed:

    Broken Codecs
    -------------

I just noticed that there is no XVid listed as a video codec? I have installed "XviD-1.0.3-20122004" & its listed in my Program Files folder; do I have to do something to 'activate' this codec?
    ***

In WMP 10 the video shows as two seperate videos next to each other, unwatchable. In DivX Player, I get the audio falling behind.

Is it a matter of forcing DivX Player to use a certain codec? Do I have too many installed & should uninstall some (will this make a difference?)?
Even though GSpot said it was a good file, could it be faulty?
I can supply any other info from GSpot (or any other utility) if needed..

I really appreciate any help, I hate to chuck out a gig's worth of downloads if its just a matter of software, etc..

    Thanks, Nathan

    Update

    UPDATE:

I have just noticed in GSpot (after reading http://www.xvidmovies.com/faq/) that the Video Path reads:
    (S) --> AVI Splitter --> DivX Decoder Filter --> Subtitle Mixer --> (R)

, suggesting that the codec being used is Subtitle Mixer? I know that when I play the AVI in WMP & choose File>Properties it says the codec being used is indeed Subtitle Mixer, but as I said the performance is much better in DivX Player (not sure what codec is being used here..)

    Man I'm getting so confused

possibility a codec conflict. try VLC (videolan, free). it uses it's own codecs and plays most any format

or mpc, with nothing else running the audio video is out of synch with mpc, chances are the file itself is bad...

          Hey, thanks for the help.

With videolan, new result altogether, no picture & altered audio track (music but no vocals?!?).

With mpc, similar to WMP10 - the picture doubled on the screen, a lot worse than running it in DivX Player..

Should I maybe uninstall all my codecs & just install needed ones? If so, whats the best way to uninstall the existing codecs?

          Cheers, Nathan

assuming the files you are trying to play are not the cause, first uninstall all codec packs, then download & install the latest (alpha) version of "ffdshow"... play with media player 10 or mpc...
