Default Chewy - Please help with NEC Burner

I've been DVD burning for a couple of years now, but last month I decided to upgrade my 2x burner to a new NEC 16X Dual Layer, model #ND3540a. My problem is playback on at least one DVD player - in the car. Through trial and error, I have pinpointed the exact disc that I started having problems with playback, and it was the first disc I burned with the new burner. I changed nothing - using DVD Shrink and Nero just liked I've used hundreds (literally) of times before. Unfortunately, the movies that play in the car are for my son, such as Lilo & Stitch 2, Robots, and Madagascar. They play fine on two different players at home, but once they go into the car, I get a read error message every time. I've noticed that under the burner properties, there is no region chosen, and the driver version is 5.1.2535.0. I am going to select Region 1 right now since I am in the middle of another burn - shrinking right now. Hopefully this solves it - doubtful. I have a 2004 Acura MDX that has played everything up to this point.

    Any Help?!?

    1. What brand of media are you using?
    2. How fast are you burning them?

TDK 8x DVD+R - burning at 8x. Should I drop down to 4x? I've been doing some reading, and there seems to be a corellation with write speed and compatibility.

Try 4X, if you still experience problems go down to 2X.

Edit: I have the same burner and I love it! I have yet to burn a coaster!

I haven't confirmed with the 3540a yet, but I am pitching the first
disk burned after flash or new media change with my 3520's.

It's something to do with the first time an nec or benq burner sees a certain media and power calibration, I do know the first burn takes longer.

Take Jmet's advise, post a nero log, and plan on flashing the firmware
to bitset those +r's for compatibility in the car player.

Thanks to both jmet and Chewy. I will try both a new firmware flash and a slower burn speed. It's funny, with this new burner, it seems to take longer to go through the analyze and encode processes using DVDShrink. My old 2.4x HP burner went faster but burned sloooooow.

Another reason to flash, it comes with riplock(slow speed) on reading dual layer dvd's out of the box, modified firmware turns it into the fastest ripper
I have ever benched. No contest.

Go here and download "1W7_rpc1.zip" version firmware under NEC-3540 in the "Modified Firmware" section. Your ripping speed will increase considerably!

Thanks for all your help Chewy and jmet. I flashed my burner last night and changed the default setting to dvd-rom. It was set to dvd+r before, and it would not let me change it. Funny though, I re-copied all three movies that were an issue (the cartoons), and I noticed by the third one that they were burning at 12x. I told myself that these were trashed, but I decided to test them, and my son and I watched one of them from beginning to end, and I saw no difference whatsoever. However, in the future, I will slow down the speed to 4x just to play it safe. By the way, the media I am using is TDK DVD+R 8X Printables. I picked up 200 of them from Costco for $40.00 a couple of months back.

I was gonna say setting the bitsetting on the +R would maybe sort it.... Some Burners first software wont support bitsetting until F?W is flashed....

    Glad it's all sorted anyway...

I allways burn using the maximum speed allowable... x8 on Ritek G-05 -R or x16 With RITEKF1 -R...

The +R I Use are Ritek again R03 x8 with bitsetting.... I guess its time for MCC 004 (verbatim dye) Media sometime when prices come down a bit more...

    Congrats...

    Mums the word Chewy!

I ordered 100 of the 16x +r verbs for 35$ from newegg last week,
then picked up another at officemax for $30 sunday, cheap enough?

Got plenty of to experiment with. testtesttest

from what I have read there's plant in india that produces them and they
sell in europe and it's inferior to the Tawain disks.
