Compatability pain

Hi, I'm new and I have a problem with getting a software upgrade for old hardware. The hardware in question is a Sony CD-RW CRX100E and a HITACHI DVD-ROM GD-3000. They originally came with Win98 compatible software, but since upgrading to WinXP they now only work as cd roms, I'm unable to burn discs or view dvds.It appears that I may have to purchase a new multidrive but it seems a waste to throw away good drives that haven't been used much. Is there any software out there that is suitable for WinXP? Would appreciate any advice for an old plodder.
