BenQ DW1610 not burning dvd's :(

Hi all,

Hope that one of you can help me! I have a BenQ DW 1610 burner. I have had no problems burning for a while now, since I updated my firmware earlier in the year. (Thanks to Cynthia from my last cry for help! )I have been using DVD-R's that are Fuji, Mitsumi, & Unifino brands with no problems. A few days ago, I opened a new spindle of Fuji Dvd-R's and could not burn a few. My Shrink and Nero programs kept saying that the discs are illegal.

So, I downloaded the latest firmware and flashed my burner. I managed to burn one more Fuji DVD-R that was originally declared an "illegal disc" successfully, so I figured problem was solved. Unfortunately not... I couldn't burn anything afterwards.

I still had my older firmware that I downloaded earlier in the year and reflashed, but no success. Now I CAN'T burn to any of the dvd-r's, especially the Mitsumi's, which I have burned a bunch already.

I figure that there is something wrong with my burner. It was working fine a few days ago, and I did have a Windows XP downloaded update, so wondering if that has messed things up?

I also downloaded Nero 6 Ultra Edition 6.6.0.13 but still no success. I just burned a music cd and everything was fine...

Here is what happened in the recent DVD burn attempt...

"Nero Version: 6.6.0.13"
Update your version of Nero, they are up to 6.6.0.18 now. Go here and download "Update-Package 1" - http://www.nero.com/us/nero-up.php

"Recorder: <BENQ DVD DUAL DW1610> Version: B8T9 "
Update your firmware. You are 1 version behind. Go here and download "B8V9" - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1908

Make sure you have the latest firmware for your burner. That will ensure more media compatibility.

Installing your firmware:

1. Don't run any other programs at the same time
2. Don't have any disc in your burner at the same time
3. Restart your PC after you have flashed it.

"Physical memory : 238MB (244464kB)
Free physical memory: 105MB (107640kB)
Memory in use : 55 %"
I would seriously recommend you getting some more RAM. You barely have enough!

"Disc Manufacturer: OPTODI - SCR004"
Get some better blank media!

Also try lowering outcome the "Target DVD size".

Open DVD Shrink. Click "Edit", then "Preferences". On the first tab at the top in the drop down box, change it from "DVD-5 (4.7GB) to "Custom" and enter a number of 4200MB (4464MB is burning to the edge of the disc, you want to stay away from the edge as the edge of cheap media (disc's) are poorly manufactured). Screen Shot Below:

"Burn process started at 4x (5,540 KB/s)"
Try burning them at 2X before you trash them.

Each and everything jmet specified is needed to ensure a good burn.

and he didn't even mention the possible conflict with nero and
Sonic Solutions (www.sonic.com) or VERITAS Software, Inc (www.veritas.com).
which are associated with the

still not working...

Hi jmet & chewy,

Wondering if you guys have any more ideals. I have downloaded and installed the latest Nero version and firmware per your instructions jmet, but no success... Here is the latest log.... If it is a RAM thing, then I will have to wait till next week to get more, since this week will be crazy with last minute shoppers for Christmas...

Your advice and tips are greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance for your time.. I tried unsuccessfully this time to burn with Fuji Dvd-r's....

Get some better blank media and your problems will go away. Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden are the brands I use and recommend.

Dvd - or + & brand name?

Hi jmet,

Thanks for the tip.. hopefully this will work... this is a silly question, but I have been using Fuji brand dvd-r with no problems. Why did this problem come up now? Also, I thought that Fuji was pretty good, since these ones are made in Japan as well.

I will try to get my hands on Taiyo or Verbatim brand and try those out and report back to you... BTW.. still stick with "-R", or do I switch to "+R" now?

Thanks again for your help!

looks like tawain

watch out for fuji headquarters
look for "made in xxxxx"

I'd return them as defective, your firmware supports them, I looked!

Another note several reviewers reported trouble with -R media, especially 8x,
but much better results with +R media.
Sony still has a made in japan 8x +r, and some fuji's 8x +r are also
around.
I wonder how it would work with cdspeed as a quality scanner?
Drop a good burned disk in and open cdspeed(nero tools) tab on
quality scan, set speed for 8x, start(test to see if drive is dying).

still wondering...

Hi Chewy,

I thought the same thing as well, since these fuji dvd-r's are made in Taiwan. However, I tried burning with my other Fujis, which are made in Japan. I also tried again with unifino (made in Japan as well), and my regular Mitsumi brands. All these three I have burned a lot before with no problems. That's why I'm so confused... I am wondering if it is because there is something wrong with my burner...

any ideas?

Hi Chewy,

I'm still new with Nero Smart so am I doing what you told me correctly?

Hope so..

Hi Chewy,

Here are the results of the scan. I did a fuji dvd-r and a dvd-rw. I DON'T have any of the Japanese ones on hand, since I gave them to my relatives. Anyways, hope that you can still figure out what's going on... I have no idea what the results mean, but saved them for you.... Thanks again!
