    Rechecking your burns

    1. Duh, they quit playing on marginal players
    2. Do a transfer test with cdspeed in a fast picky reader(nec burners).
    3. Even faster do a quick scan with cdspeed if your drive supports it,
just go into options, quality scan and change measure point from 20 to 50.
After the scan, leave the program open and pop in your next questionable disk.

I don't know if quick scan is a reliable indication of a disc quality.

Until now the best test is the couple scan-transfer rate test.

However, in my opinion, the best is not transfer rate test, but actual copying of files on HD. I think this because transfer rate is a simulation, whereas actually copying files is the real process.

    But maybe I'm wrong.

and then you time that transfer, if it takes too long(like 30 minutes),
you say got that one just in time, if it takes 6-7 minutes(whoops).

        Here I am

        First image is quick scan
        Second is transfer rate test
        Third is regular scan

However, this disc was burned with my old liteon 811, a not so good burner. This burning was bad from the start. After so long time the disc is still readable, but I'll reburn soon this disc.

If I'll find another media tomorrow I'll post here

Most of my early burns were with liteon 811, so quality wasn't very good from the start.

thanks Mill, we need confirmation every now and then, and that's supposed to be Tier 1 media according to our links

I am sure they still play on a good standalone, have you kept the disks
protected or was that liteon really that bad, some of those TDK were
manufactured in Tawain, which might have been the problem!
More like fakes than real, that's why our link needs to be updated.

I don't remember where these discs come from, but I store all my discs in a correct way (each in its proper jewel case staying away from light).

This was really a bad burn from the start because I burned @8x.

I'll search other discs tomorrow and post a couple of scans

I will add some when I have the time.

I recently did a scan of a Imation brand DVD+R that was burnt August 3, 2003. I think the quality score was around 35. I'll do it again though to make sure and get some screen shots.

An user asked me ad CDFreaks for a scan of the same media with liteon: here is the scan

                    What do you think Chewy?

The liteon isn't as picky as the benq, to verify check a
average new burn with good media(say pushing it at 12x) scan with both and you should find the liteon reporting higher quality. If my theory is right?
I like your Benq better, good tools are precise and picky.
A transfer test on my LG 4136B shows perfect slopes/lines with the crappiest
burns/media, but I wouldn't trade it for your benq or mine, a good reader like than is very rare.

You're gettimg me curious to buy a LG drive.

Besides for RAM media, I'd like to have a so good reader of unreadable discs!

What do you think of latest LG burner (I can't find 4163 anymore )

                          not as good?
that's why I'll keep mine and maybe even retire it from burning
after I get my benq 1650

I must search in my zone stores to see if I find a 4163.

Have you tryied to put your LG on an external box?

no quality scans from me (nec 3500) but decent quality i should think:

                              ricohjpn03 16x burned @ 6x with nec3500ag
