    Verbatim DVD+R: Any Good?

I used to use "Ritek" GO4 and never had a problem with them. Now they're no longer sold. I then went with "Taiyo Yuden" DVD-R (TYG02) discs (code: 1736) but they are giving me mostly bad burns (I own a SONY DRU-710A Burner). I think I read somewhere that "Verbatims" are considered to be among the best. I primarily shop at RIMA and found some verbatim discs there. Are these particular discs any good?

    Those are good media,
What speed are you burning at?
Can you post a nero log on a "bad burn"? there may be other issues to cause a bad burn.

As for a good price on the verbatim's if you have a Sam's club near you they carry them $25.00 for a spool of 100.

I always burn at 4x. I will never go higher than that. The DVDs burn fine. I have trouble with the playback. They skip or freeze throughout the disc. It seems that out of a pack of 100 TYG02 DVDs, 50% will have the freezin/skipping problem. I don't know if it's a bad batch or what. Below is my Nero log. The finished disc had skipping problems. I then burned another disc using the same file and it works fine. Strange.

Oh, I intentionally downgraded my DVD burner firmware. I originally had BYX5. But I went back to the BYX4. I seemed to have had some success after I downgraded to an older firmware.

have you checked the TY burns in another player?
they should be as good or better than the verbatim

if it's really burning them that bad it may be going out

I have 2 DVD players in the house: A mintek and an old Toshiba. The Toshiba can't play any DVD-R's or +Rs but that's no surprise since it's about 6 years old I think.

I also tried it on my brothers players. He has 3 including an X-Box. They skip and freeze on his too. I have been hoping that my burner is not at fault, but I'm not sure how I could know for sure.

I have a 6 year old Toshiba model now too and mine wont play DVD+R but will play DVD-R, I bought a high end one at that time.

If it is your burner they dont cost very much these days. How long have you have the burner?

I got it last christmas for about $70. An incredible price at the time. I was recently looking around some trusted online stores, seeing if they still sell my burner somewhere. But it looks like Sony is phasing it out to make room for newer burners because everywhere I go it's out of stock.

A normal DVD (War of the Worlds, Batman Begins, etc) will play fine on my burner. No freezing or skipping. But any backup discs that freezes on my standalone player will also freeze on my burner.

I've found that my $120 Sony (at the time) that is advertised to play anything in any format on a cd/dvd skips or pixelates almost every back up (and I use Verbatiums @ 4x both -R and +R). I bought a crap $20 magnavox for my office on sale that plays almost everything without error (+R). It's now attached to the main tv for all my back up playing.

As far as the verbatims - I only have one problem disc so far and I'm not sure it's the original disc I backed up from yet. My son doesn't complain so I haven't re-burn't it.

                        Hope this helps

I was wondering about that too. Apparently, the Nero Info tool doesn't see an ASPI file in "System ASPI" (it says that none are installed). But it does see one in "Nero ASPI". Unfortunately, it will only let me use the non-existant "System ASPI". Anyway, I Just fixed this problem minutes ago by placing the "NERO ASPI" in the /WINNT/system32 folder. Now my nero info tool sees it . Maybe this will help my problem when it comes time to burn again?
