    Default Menu problem

I have noticed lately that I am getting menu problems on quite a few DVDs. What happens is everything seems to work properly, but when you access a menu like "Special Features", the choices are blank and all you can do is move the ______ up and down and you can select the choice but you can't read what you are selecting. Anybody know why this is happening and what I can do to fix that from happening?

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

What program(s) are you using to make your backups?

First, check out how your output looks in a software player like media player classic. If it works well on your PC, you know it's your burning prog/media.

Ok I just tried playing it in my PC. I can see everything in the menus. But can't hear anything. I never watch movies on my PC anyways...so I don't know what's up with that.

I am using Nero to burn and I am burning on Verbatim Dual Layer Discs.

How do I fix this problem??

    Thanks,
    Duane

Did you play your ripped files on the PC? In what software player?

The verbs are tremendous blanks, can't say the same about Ner0.

I just used Windows Media Player to play back.
I am using the Verbs because I got some inkjet printables. I read up on them before buying and heard nothing but good reviews about their reliablity.

Sorry, I misread that...you were praising the Verbs...haha and dissing Nero. Well I've used Nero for some time and never had a problem until now. What program should I be using to burn Dual Layer discs?

Imgburn is superior to any DL burning app out there and best of all it is free. Rip to HDD using DVD Decrypter via ISO read mode and then burn from the MDS file with Imgburn.

Can you do me a favour and DL Media Player Classic from the link in my signature. And play your project (not burned, but the soft copy on your PC) on it. WMP is hopeless with playing DVDs/DVD files

Hopefully, the menus will look and sound OK.

    Ok,
I just played back using Media Player Classic. Both playing the actual file on my computer, and playing back the burned disc seem to play fine and are not experiencing the same problems with the menu as I am getting on my 2 different home DVD players.

    So, now what?

How can I get these discs to play fine on my home units?

So, we have established the DVD is not at fault (or the ripped files).

Did you set the booktype to DVD ROM?

Try also to clean your players. Maybe take the DVD to a friends place and see if it plays well there. Then it would be a player issue.

These are fairly new upconverting DVD players so I doubt there's anything wrong with them...and the original discs play fine on them. I set it to record as a DVD Video disc, not DVD ROM. I have burned hundreds of regular discs with no problems...I just started using the DL discs recently.

Perhaps next time, you might like to follow this guide and see if it burns better.

For one reason or another, players seem to like the booktype set to DVDROM - see What's bitsetting in my signature.
