    Nec 3550

Decided to purchase an NEC 3550 burner, probably from Newegg or Tigerdirect and was wondering about retail or OEM issues. Are the units usually the same with any differences being in just the packaging usually? Also, are there issues when updating firmware with OEM vs. retail? I don't want to get some odd burner rebadged as an NEC. Anyone have thoughts or experience on this? Oddly the retail is often less expensive...?

I bought the NEC 3550 OEM and it came with the newest NEC firmware available at the time, and has always worked great!

Once you get the new drive, do not forget to update it. I use Liggy and Dee's version 1Y6 RPC 1. I love it because it burns DVD+r's as DVD-rom's. This makes my discs highly compatable with any player. Since switching from DVD-r's, the quality score of my scans almost reach's Chewy's!!

Edit; Sorry Dan we double posted

Yeah, when I hit the reply button everything stopped there for a minute, LOL.
I use the 1Y6 RPC1 also, and I totally agree with what you said!

Thanks everyone for your input, sounds like any software that may come with it would be the only real difference (nero express). I was just concerned about firmware updating but apparently that shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for the tips...made this easy.
