    Burning Problem

    Hello all...first post for me

I have been using dvd shrink on a gateway laptop for over a year with no problems...i recently purchased a new gateway laptop spec'd almost the same (larger screen).

i am having alot of problems burning with the new laptop...actually haven't been able to burn a successful one...i've used dvd shrink and dvd decrypter to burn the discs.

    the problems are:
    - EVERY disc burned so far, no matter how long the movie, produces an inner ring of about 3/4" in diameter and an outer lighter one about 1/2" in diameter
    - the burn completes but when i try and playback on my computer, just about every disc freezes at chapter 4 (9 minutes into the movie)
    - i'm also experiencing inconsistent playback on my panasonic dvd player (out of sync video/sound, freezing, pixelation)
    - i've gotten the same results with two different types of media

very frustrating because i've used dvd shrink ALOT without any problems

do you folks think the burner on my new laptop my be bad?

after posting this message, i tried burning at a different speed...i didn't get the different rings as stated above, but the movie doesn't play after chapter 4 again...basically, i'm not able to chapter advance past it

all movies i've tried so far...brokeback, derailed, narnia...

i'm trying maxell and tdk media...

never had problems using dvd shrink and nero 6.0 on old computer...maybe i need to tune up settings on this new laptop?

i'm making complete burns...they seem to play...but with errors usually later in the movie

did the 4x burn play better than the 8x one?

durn you're in luck(maybe), since that's a qsi rebadged philips burner
with some bad reviews I figured there would be no firmware updates.

But, make sure it's for your laptop

stick with 4x burning at max and the made in tawain maxell and tdk is pretty bad media

              thanks chewy

the 4x burn didn't play any better...still froze at chapter 4, but i don't see the distinctive rings that i was getting before...

i downloaded the firmware upgrade, but i'm at work and can't test right now

bought the tdk media at costco in 100 quantities...and the maxell at walmart...not the best suppliers of high quality media i'm sure

i'll test tonight when i get home!

let's hope the firmware and 4x help
and don't multitask, try to shut down some stuff, there's way too much memory in use

                  hi chewy

tried to burn brokeback again...with the new firmware...seems like a better copy than before, but now it stalls at chapter 5 instead of 4...if the player makes it past chapter 5, then the rest of the movie plays fine...here's the log

dvd shrink is the only program i have running when i run this

would bad media make the same errors occur at almost the same time in every movie? 10-15 minutes into the movie

                  the original dvd's play fine

during the burn phase, i can hear the burner change speeds to a faster sound...maybe something is happening at that time?

one thing i never noticed before is having dvd shrink turn on automatically the dvd book setting...

                  any thoughts are greatly appreciated

Here's an idea, go to www.imgburn.com and dl the latest version, it is the burn engine from DVDD, try and do an ISO image and see how that does. Cynthia has links to the new dvd shrink to make it work with ImgBurn instead of dvdd, but dvdd still works fine. Blutach's signature has a good post on why not to burn with nero, and since I quit i have a lot less coasters floating around.

Oh yes DVDD and ImgBurn can both take you directly to a firmware update page by right clicking your burner and choosing check for firmware update option.

okay, downloaded imgburn and burned an iso...same exact problem...

i right-clicked and did the firmware check, but the website couldn't find mine...i'm pretty sure i've updated the latest from the gateway site...

so i've burned with nero/dvd shrink, dvd decrypter (iso), imgburn (iso) and am getting the same exact results...a completed burn that freezes and sputters at chapter 4/5 (10/15 minutes into the movie)

maybe something wrong with the burner since i'm using different software?

also, the constant is i'm still trying to use the two stacks of media i have...tdk discs from costco....and maxell disks from walmart...and same problems on both media

What are the media ID codes of these disks? (see link in my signature for how to find out and your log for some reason doesn't show it - this could be a firmware issue). Either the burner is a dud or the blanks are. Before chucking the burner out, try with some Verbatims or Yudens.

Don't worry about the tiny outer "ring" - that is just the unburned part of the disk (although 1/2" sounds like a lot).

Do a Nero CD-Speed test on your burned disks. See "how to test your disc" in my signature.

EDIT: Also get rid of CDRALW2K.SYS (it's a hangover from a Roxio CD Creator install and conflicts).

                        Regards

                          thanks blutach...

this laptop is two weeks old and i haven't installed any software having to do with roxio...how do i get rid of CDRALW2K.SYS?

the outer ring i'm referring to is always the same size on every disc burned at 8x speed...when burned at 4x there are no extra rings.

i will do testing on the burns that i have made and see what kind of errors show up...

and head out to buy new media as well

running nero cd-dvd speed right now...full of bad sectors...almost at 50/50 and still going...taking forever to complete the scan because of the bad sectors i guess...

                              using ritek R03 disks

so i'm sure i've updated the firmware, i will have to buy better media i guess to ultimately test if it's the burner that's bad?
