Quality comparison: Brotherhood of the Wolf

    "Brotherhood of the Wolf - Director's Cut" - 145min / 3323 kbps average bitrate

the following routines/settings were used for this test:

    - DVDShrink => max sharphness
    - DVDShrink => max smoothness

    DVD Rebuilder with:
    - AutoQMatEnc 0.32
    - CCE 2.70.02.06
    - HC Enc 017
    - Procoder 2

Click here to see the screenshots

CloneDVD and DVD2ONEv2 were not used any more for this test as their results were too poor the last time:

Nice test. How long did AutoQMatEnc 0.32 and Procoder take out of interest?
Also, whats your overall opinion, as its a little hard to see the overall quality from screen shots?

aqm took 279min but procoder2 time cannot be judged as i ran it while using the pc

the total time for procoder was 581 min but it would have been much less had i run the conversion over night without using the pc

this test was run as this previous test raised some questions

one question or rather statement was that shrink should be used with max SHARPNESS instead of max smoothness

the theory behind how those aec settings work have always led me to the assumption that smoothness is the way to go and this particular test scenario has proved me right

shrink's SMOOTH results are less blocky than the results from using aec max sharp and we're dealing with a rather medium to high bitrate here (3323kbps)

the next thing that is noteworthy is the fact that ALL screenshots from the aqm modus are taken from P-frames - it is a coincidence or rather the way aqm works (i.e. not using b-frames in higher action scenes)

cce, hc, procoder and aqm all look noticibly better than shrink with cce being my clear winner in this test with (as i said before) a rather high average bitrate of 3323kbps

a longer title may have left cce behind its competitors like so often before - i guess i should test kingkong soon

Did you use QMatOp with AQM (CCEAQM=1 in the REBUILDER.INI file)? Also, have I missed somewhere the amount of passes used?

My AQM tries appear to take over 5 hours with a 3 pass encode (and I have a 3.2 P4) but I was testing with the latest beta (version 0.33.0.3) which apparenly has improved image quality at low bitrates....

WOW that is intersting to see. I have only used dvd shrink and usually DVDShrink => max smoothness. I love the results I get.

          Thanks for posting those results.

            @ pa

aec => max smoothness takes very long but it should result in a better bitrate distribution over ALL frames as opposed to max sharp which shrinks b-frames more

so in theory: the longer the title and the lower the average bitrate the more it is suggested to use max smootheness

i will run a kingkong test soon and post some results

Good Job UncasMS. Although AQm gives better results in low BR, but you should have used AQM latest beta ver, since that can handle high BR also.

that test will take quite a while, the extra 35 minutes seems to more than double times with shrink

Question for those using AutoQmatEncHas anyone been seeing a blur around people or objects in certain parts of the movie. I noticed this in King Kong and I want to know if it's me or the encoder I should mention I didn't use filters just autoqmatop

Don't mean to be disrespectful to post in another post I thought it would be ok since UncasMS used AutoQmatenc. I just figured it would still be on topic If it's not I apologize

                      the extra 35 minutes
                      WHICH extra 35 mins?
                      the touareg stuff?

since i rather consider this blatant advertising i blanked that bit (though the touareg is a nice car indeed) and only left the 3hrs main movie + 6min menu

                          oh, i see

                          didnt get you before

but why do you assume the 35min difference will lead to 2x the time?

i didnt note the shrink times for brotherhood so i wont be able to tell but i am running a max sharp process now in the background and it does not seem to take THAT much longer

my SW3 max sharp?+DA at 2hr20min movie time was ~30 min.
KingKong(3hrs/main title) was around 2 hours with shrink.
the DA part is not timed so I am going to retest with smaller files and try to
correlate compression vs time, SW3 was ~70%, KK was 54%
                            Bell curve?

i think i see what you're driving at

atm the encoding time for the max sharp test has taken way longer than i thought it would

it is running in the background but i may repeat sometime later on w/out using the pc at all
