i/o magic DVD burner not recognized by software + problem updating firmware

    Hi,

I have an i/o magic dvdrw 1008ui (according to the label on the bottom of the drive) and my writing software has not been able to detect/burn to it. My OS is windows xp, and I tried to download and install firmware for the writer from the i/o magic firmware upgrade website. Sadly when I try to run it, it gives me the message:

This firmware can be used on below drives :
    (1) DVDRW USB1008UI .
    (2) DVDRW USB1008 .
    CD-ROM drive model doesn't match!!

and nothing is showing in the 'target drive' box so I can't press upgrade. I wonder whether the model number is actually different to what it says. I can't run Nero info tool or dvdinfopro (I get different and confusing error messages with both), but I managed to run "Flashman's Detect Firmare Version Tool" and this is the info it gave me:

    Device: HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR8081N Firmware Version: 0012

Any help would be *much* appreciated !

To the first question: yes, I followed the instructions on that page, but when I tried to install the firmware update it gave me the error message that I posted.

And yes, it is an ibm Tthirty-something laptop.

        Cheers!

Yes perfect day for a little google sleuthing! Thanks for that info, very surprising that they would mis-market it like that.

Sadly my laptop doesn't have a floppy drive, and the only burner is the dvd-rw which is not being recognised, so I'll have to wait until work tomorrow to make the bootable firmware update disk and see if running the update works. I'll keep you posted.

it's not a burner, unless you have 2 drives?

                  sorry - mistake

Hmmm...there's an internal drive on the laptop, which is a cd/dvd rom, and then there's an external usb-connected i/o magic one. I guess when I ran the 'detect firmware version tool' it only detected the internal one, and I got a little confused and thought it was referring to the external one.

So I still have the problem that my external i/o magic dvd writer (cheap but NOT cheerful!) is not being recognized in windows xp (whereas it worked with win 2000) and none of the firmware detectors seem to be able to detect it either?

                  Sorry again for the confusion,

                  Rakhi

I am glad you have 2 drives,
back to ground zero, does the drive show in my computer(drive letter) etc

Yes, it shows up in my computer, but it doesn't let me do anything with it - it's not being seen by any burning software.

Download the latest infotool from jmet's sticky and attach a full report if it
will let you? You might need to make a trip into msconfig first to kill some problematic programs.

Sorry it took so long, had to wait until I got home. I ran the latest Nero Infotool and it hung up after detecting the internal dvdrom. Everything's been frozen for the last 20 mins and I couldn't even save the print screen I took!

Here's what is said b4 it froze:

                          Retrieving Drive Information

                          Found drive 1 at HA:1 ID:0

also used to find conflicts and it sounds like you have a doozy, is there another computer you can use to check the external drive on?

                              What's a doozy?

Okay, I turned off all startups and services I thought I wasn't using - it doesn't seem like a conflict b/c when I ran Nero infotool without plugging in the dvd burner it ran perfectly well, and gave me a lot of info on the internal dvd-rom. But when I tried it again having plugged it in, infotool hung up at exactly the same spot???

Also there's no other computer I can install stuff on, so I'm not going to be able to install the driver for the burner on anything other than this laptop.

                              Thanks,

                              Rakhi
