bitset changes with NEC ND 3550 A

I attempted to change the bit set from dvd+ to dvd rom, with imgburn and it would not do it, there was also a message that there is a maximum of 500 changes allowed is this correct? My firmware is 1.05.
If you use these forums you will not have to face that...

confirm with cdspeed and disc info tab, should show status of burned disk.

ImgBurn says DVD+R by deault when you change the booktype. Chances are the disc is actually booktyped to "DVD-ROM".

            My firmware is 1.05.
The NEC 3550 will not do bitsetting without Liggys and Dees firmware for the burner.

Get Version 1Y6 here (Pick the RPC1 firmware!). You need this firmware to do bitsetting!

yes i was going to flash this later, had to work doing inventory today, but it is done for another yr. got out early getting to my jungle of a lawn then taking apart the machine to flash my NEC in safe mode on master alone. heres the log and some scans to look at while I'm away.

Why such a difference in the scans from the nec to my liteon? shoudn't they show a similar pattern?

well they do, the rogue spike you can ignore in the liteon scan, the liteon
corrects a lot of smaller stuff the nec doesn't handle well. The liteon is considered a better scanner, have you scanned the same disk at different speeds with the nec? Some do better at 5x some 8x some 16x?
NEC burns better, liteon scans and reads better. Compare premium media and the differences are less, ignore pie's with nec, always bad.

ok so I got dee's 1Y6 firmware, when I changed it with imgburn it said said sucess and gave me 499 times more to change it. What happens if I hit zero? Is there a way to reset the counter? Maybe by 500 burns we should look for a new burner?

I think thats how many times you can change the booktype,,(DVD+R DL to
DVD-ROM or DVD+R to DVD-ROM)not how many burns you can do,
and once changed you should never have to change it again..

                            right??? wrong???

never thought about it but you must be right since the counter is supposed to protect the eprom, when you set it(bitsetting), the programs have to write to it.
I guess they just check later or the drive reports to the program.
Means a lot of drives which don't remember get set a bunch.
