DVDs too BIG

I've been backing up DVDs for a while now. But I still can't backup those DVDs that has 4.7G or more. I've heard that if the birate of some files can be shrinked and in do so can decrease the space. Is this true? If so, will someone please give me some clues. Many thanks in advance.

It is poss to reduce the Video bit rate.

Thanks for the suggestion. I went there and found a dvd guide called DVD-5. It's serveral pages long and looks scary, but I will give it a try. Thanks again.
