    Newbie with Samsung burner questions

Hi, all. I've been following the DVD Decryptor forum and using my laptop with great success, the forum is a wonderful resource. However, my laptop is a couple of years old, and reads at around 5x and burns at 2x. In an effort to speed things up, I bought the latest Samsung burner in a USB cable/external enclosure and just connect it up to my laptop. The burner is a TSST corp 16x dual layer SH-W162Z which I thought was a pretty good burner. However, I noticed that whenever I have it set to read at higher than about 6x, it errors on most dics that it tries to read. I haven't tried to test it for different write speeds yet.

Is this a limitation in the USB cable? Or my laptop? Any way to get around this limitation?

    thanks for any help,
    kaipo

in device manager under usb there will be an "enhanced" controller if you have
usb2, if not then an adapter card will speed things up a lot.

Hey Chewie. Thanks for the tip... but you're dealing with a retard here, sorry! I do see the following: Intel(r) 8280 1DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller - 24CD

What do I do with it?

nothing, you are good to go, that's a usb2 controller, a lot of people can't find device manager

the chipset in the enclosure might be what's slowing it down

Also, in addition to the controller noted above which does say 2.0, there are 3 other USB controllers that do not say 2.0... on the back of my laptop, there are only 2 USB ports. Does it matter which port I use? Am I using one of the other controllers and not the 2.0 controller?

OOps, got your message. Chipset, huh? I was afraid you'd say that. Is there a way to upgrade or flash the existing chipset? Sounds like it might be easier to find another enclosure.

That said, Chewy, can you recommend a good enclosure with a known good chipset? And where to find them? Thanks a bundle, man!

usually all will be the same

usb1 would be like 1x speed, I had to double check first tho, people don't always give accurate data

your new burner should do fine burning at 4x, if not 8X(iffy) w/ laptop and
                expernal burner

use that one up, burner and enclosure, and next time ask for advise on
burners/readers, that samsung may be a bad reader, too rare to tell.

Besides a real fast combo might be too fast for your laptop

                  this tool might work

Thanks again, Chewy; one last question. Is the chipset part of the housing? Or is it part of the burner? If I buy another burner and use the same housing, will I have the same problem? I see used LG GSA 4163B burners on ebay for around $34... thinking of buying one and installing in my external enclosure.

                    aloha,
