    SATA Installation Q

Do you have to provide the drivers for SATA Disks while installing Windows XP from scratch or is it a normal installation(like IDE disks). This is for MoBo Asus P5LD2-VM.

Yeah, its SATA HDD, but DELL would have given you an unattended install disk for OS and other drivers, wherein , I am talking about assembled PC and Win XP.

recently I have been running into some sort of bios implementation of ide emulation where you don't have to have a sata chipset driver disk for xp to see your serial drives, this is a welcome improvement.

simple test boot to the cd and see if windows sees the drive(s)

After exploring a bit, I found that Windows XP Pro does not detect SATA HDD and you have to use F6 to provide for the driver using a floppy disk.

But further exploration also revealed that if your version of Window XP CD has an integrated SP2, you wouldnt need to provide for the SATA drivers.

Otherwise create a Slipstream XP CD with SP2.

              tech,
what do you base that on? might be bios and sp2 combination, my asus will not.

This Article + the various posts by end users in various forums.

I will do my install tomorrow, so can confirm that also.

Some ppl posted that it does detect SATA drives for installation, but with ultra ATA drivers, so once installed, you need to install the proper drivers.

This is just to do away a need for a floppy drive during installation.

Thats what my installtion will confirm, Slipstream with sata drivers, native Windows XP with SP2 or a COmbination of Native XP with SP2 and BIOS SATA support. Since its not very clear in the searches.

EDIT:I have posponed my installation by few days as I was lacking some hardware, but i will definitely post my results in a few days

Getting very strong with the force, way to go, I just keep a couple of floppy drives with cables handy!

did the slipstream a long time ago with sp1, my hats off to you!
My directions didn't include the copy and paste trick with the run command,
I could kill that guy! then I named the cd wrong on top of that

Okay, I installed the OS without any external driver.

                        WinXP Pro with SP2 CD
                        Seagate SATA 160 GB HDD
                        ASUS P5LD2-VM motherboard

The motherboard was able to detect the HDD in enhanced IDE mode and eveything went smooth without any hicups.

So probably if your motherboard has support for SATA, you should not face any problems with WinXP pro SP2.
