    help with Unspecified Recorder Error

I have been using Nero and DVD Shrink for a while now and have never had any problems until now. Last week I had to reformat my HD and reinstall everything. I can no longer back up my DVDs and I keep getting the same error.

This error happens whether I use DVD Shrink or Nero. Once encoding is finished I get an Unspecified Recorder Error and the process halts.

I have read many threads and have checked many settings on my computer. DMA is set correctly, I have the newest Firmware, and I even uninstalled and reinstalled Shrink since I read that Shrink had to be installed after Nero. I have even tried several different versions of Nero.

I am using imation DVD-R blanks if that matters.

Below is the log from the last burn attempt.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    JSH

      Thanks so much,

I have read many of those posts already, including some others about similar problems. I am still not able to figure out what the problem is.

I am currently trying to burn from HD to DVD using Shrink (with Nero option turned off) and using Decrypter ISO method.

I hope it works... I'm getting pretty frustrated.

      Any other suggestions?

      Thanks again,

      JSH

in this case I wouldn't use nero

overloaded laptops with virtual drives do well just to work

          nice hard drive

          free up some memory/resources

          don't multitask

          use better media, that's junk

          try imgburn

unmount the virtual drives if all else fails

I thought all of the burning aps use Nero? Can I burn without Nero?

Also, I have Nero 7 Ultra (I thought that was the newest). What should I upgrade to?

OK, so I tried again. This time I unmounted all virtual drives... I uninstalled the stupid Widget Engine... And I ran no other programs. The only background procs running are window blinds, cursor xp, and icon packager.

Here is the new log file. Looks the same to me except for the virtual drives.

            Any more suggestions?

            Thanks, JSH

like cynthia said update nero 7(huge download) you are using the buggy first release

or another option download imgburn(small application and download)
              and use it to burn

won't make those opti disks good media tho

should be able to burn at 4x with either updated nero or imgburn

Ouch! My head hurts just reading you post. From my viewpoint this is what I would consider AFTER you get your hard drive back to normal or just the way you like it.

                1. RipIt4Me/DVD Shrink/Imageburn or RipIt4Me/DVD rebuilder/Imageburn is the easiest.
                2. Acronis Home Edition 9.0 for entire hard drive system backup and with the operating system backup, last time I checked around $49.
                3. RipIt4Me or DVDFabDecrypter or PgcEdit/Decrypter with PSL-2 package as the ripper.
                4. DVD Shrink or DVD rebuilder as the transcoder, encoder and compression and for custom building, DGIndex, TMPGEnc PLus, VOBEdit, IFOEdit, DVDSubEdit
                5. Imageburn as the burning software

Thanks, I will try imageburn. Does this mean I can just get rid of Nero alltogether? And do I really need RipIt4Me if I use Shrink to make the iso?

                  I hope this works.

And in case you're wondering why I have such bad media... The 50 pack was on sale for $10 at Office Depot and I said to the guy, "These DVDs are no good" and he convinced me that they were.

                  What a sucker.

Thanks again for all the help.

I'll be back if this doesn't work.

So, I tried imageburn... that didn't work. I got an error (failed to reserve track).

I installed a different version of Nero... and tried Shrink again. It looks like the same error to me.

What should I do? Please help!

                    Thanks again

Your atapi error is returning an error of "write protected".

Is this a rewriteable disc?? Have you erased it?

Look at the comments posted at videohelp about this burner. Only 2 comments and very questionable results.

Thanks to all for the help.

Tomorrow I will go get some new blank media and see if I can rule that out first.

If better media doesn't do the trick I am going to assume that the problem is my optical drive.

How can I find out what my options are dvd-r writers for my inspiron 700m?

The dell website is no help and I can only find a few slim drives on the web that state that they will work in the 700m. Is there a list anywhere or will any atapi slim drive work?

                          Thanks again,

                          JSH

any good external drive is far better than the best internal slimline

are you choosing that 1X burn speed with nero and imgburn?

what happened to the imgburn log?

forget that media with that burner?

I thought externals were slower due to the USB.

I'm choosing MAX burn speed with imgburn and Nero (am I supposed to change a setting of Nero or imgburn in order to use imgburn properly)
