    Media type and quality

    Hi,
I've got an interesting (and irritating) problem. I burn with Nero Burning Rom and use cheap Tesco's +RW discs to check that a rip has turned out OK, then, if it has, burn to the more expensive TDK +R discs to keep. That way if anything goes wrong with the rip I can reuse the +RW discs before making a final copy. That, at least was the theory. In practice, whilst both media types play back perfectly on my PC using Nero Showtime, only the cheap Tesco's +RW discs will play back on my freestanding DVD player. The obvious answer is to put my final copies on the Tesco discs, but why should this be?
Has anyone any ideas/suggestions as to why the TDK discs won't play?
    Regards,
    Manser

A lot of stand alone players are picky as to what media they will see.

You may want to try verbatim or Taiyo Yudon both of the brands you are using are not very good.

There is a link in my sig a pic that says the golden rules of burn give that a click. Its a good read.

Thanks for that. I'll check it out. Tesco's discs are great cos they're cheap and cheerful. Strangely enough my DVD plays them with no trouble. I thought TDK were supposed to be good but I'll see what the lead you've given me says. I've never heard of Taiyo Yudon and I'm not even sure it's available in the UK.
        Thanks again.
        Regards,
        Pilot.

          Thanks Mill,
Your message arrived between my reading photo angel's message and composing a reply, so my message was intended for her, but I'll check your link out as well.
          Cheers,
          Pilot.

Posting a burn log from one of the TDK's might tell us a lot more.

              Hmmm!
Can't find nerohistory.log at either of those locations. I did a search for all log files and came up with 474. and the only two relating to Nero were about installation of the program.

Are you doing the Bitsetting on the +R disks?

Sorry Solomon, I've only just seen your reply. I've been sorting out a serious corruption problem on my machine and it's taken me about two weeks to sort out. Still not sure if it's stable.
Bitsetting? I just stick them in and burn. What should I be doing. I've switched to Verbatim +R discs and have had no problems.

TDK used to make and buy high quality media. however, they have shutdown manufacturing of DVD media in their own plants (japan and luxembourg). now, most of their media is outsourced and VERY variable in quality. TDK (along with a lot of manufacturers/brands) has really gone down hill the past 1-2 years.

I've followed the earlier advice and now stick with Verbatim +R. I've had no problems with these. For the interest of UK users, Maplins are selling 100 disc packs at £40. I'm happy with that.
