Setting up multiple burners

OK Guys, I have an ASUS motherboard with 2 ide headers for a total of up to 4 ide drives. I'm looking to go with 4 ide burners, probably adding two more NEC 3550a's In order to achiece optimum performance from all drives how should it be configured? I am thinking I may need a seperate controller card and put each drive on it's own IDE channel. Am i right in my thinking? Any recomentations? I have PCI and PCI express X1 slots available.
