The latest Plextor SATA connection model, (not the Blu-Ray or HD)

Specs available at their web site

The fastest high speed model can be used for ripping and burning.
But unlikely your will be able to find good media DVD+R at 16X to keep up with their top of the line models that can burn at 18X with the latest firmware upgrade

If you are looking for something a little cheaper, but still a solid performer I would recommend the NEC 7170a. If this drive is as good as it's predecessors the 3540 and 3550 good things should be in the box. When coupled with modified firmware the drive supports bitsetting.

I've also heard good things about the Pioneer drives, but haven't had a chance to try one out yet:

If I had the opportunity to buy two drives, one as a ripper and the other as a burner, I would actually get 2 of the NEC 7170's.

        They burn great!

        They rip extremely fast!

I have owned the NEC 3520, 3540, and the previous model the 3550. They are all still running great!

Must be better to decide what media you are going to use and then find some posted results from other users with that combination of mediacode and burner.

Not Verbatim -R MCC 03RG20 and a Nec burner (3520/4551). Burned - but terribly scanning results. Tried all available firmwares - but same result.

Thanks everyone for the responses on new rippers and burners.

To jmet: Considering the specs of my system and the pros and cons from varied forums about the NEC/OPTIARC AD7170a, I have purchased 2 of these units and will be installing them upon their arrival. I will retain the LiteOn 812s and 1693s because of their scanning abilities. Can you give me a heads up on the proper firmware versions that should be installed. I understand these units will ship with the stock 1.02 firms. Also your media of choice for these would be appreciated. I currently use SONY Jpn 16x -R tyg02, SONY Jpn 16x +R D21, MAXELL Jpn 8x
                  -R mxlrg03 and VERB Tai 8x +R mcc 003.

                  Thanks a lot .......G

go with dee's or liggy's for bitsetting

Both firmwares features full bitsetting and share the same writing strategies and media speedups.

I currently run a Plex (model escapes me ATM) and the Sony 830A. Both have current FW installed. As for the media I am testing the Yuden Taiden brand? So far that is a great setup from what I have seen.

The deals usually don't get much better than $30...on occasion I've seen earlier models of the NEC burner go for $20 or they might throw in free shipping.
