Default How to make and resize your Avatar

How to make and resize your Avatar using GIMP

First off you need gimp so go here and download it.Make sure you download and install GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment first then download and install GIMP version 2.2.14
Now we are ready to go
You can select what ever picture you like for your avatar size don't matter. Now Open your gimp and then select file/open

A new window will pop up to let you select your picture

OK now that you have done that this will show up

Ok now you notice my picture size is 450x299 and we want 100x100 to correct this we need to select image/scale image as shown below

Ok now you will see this

Where I have it highlighted in red this is where you can change the size of your image you noticed I put in 100 to get my desired size there is no need to type anything in the bottom it will do it automatically.I recommend you letting gimp auto adjust your size but you don't have to you can add your custom size by braking the chain link I have highlighted in blue(But I do warn if you do it that way your picture may look funny) (If your planning on adding a border make the size 2 pixels less. Lets say you want 100x100 then just type in 98 in the width box)

OK now you will see this

OK we now have the size we want Now lets dress it up a bit by adding a border.Goto script-fu/decor/add border and this will pop up

Now set border size X & Y to 1 as shown above you can also change the color of your border by selecting border color button I chose black.
OK now your done all you have to do is save your new avatar by select file/save as It may seem like a lot but once you memorize the steps it will take you 1-2 minutes.
    Here is the end result

    I hope I didn't miss anything

Thanks for that name of the software and the guide. Imaged guides are better as well because some people don't take the time to capture images for the ones that are not sure even with a guide because they can't find this n' that and the images pin-point everything to make it as easy as turning a doorknob. I don't know if anyone else has noticed this with some guides, some of the instrctions are missing as if they only provide an edited draft where we all have to figure some of it out for ourselves. I remember years ago when I was trying to use the Microsoft Publishing Wizard years ago, the instructions that Microsoft wrote with the publishing tool were as useful as a paper umbrella in a thunderstorm, meaning, they skipped lots. This is why I prefer imaged guides. Sorry if I started babbling. I'm sure I can use GIMP without a guide but I just wanted to make my point on how useful imaged guides are.

Do you have a pentium processor with MMX technology?
I noticed on the download page at gimp.org it says
This is the recommended version of Gimp.org
GIMP binary available from this page was compiled for Pentium MMX or better CPUs.
I am not sure if that would cause the problem your having. You may have a bad install try uninstalling and clean up your reg with CCleaner and then try reinstalling. If that dont work try going to gimptalk.com they are very knowledgeable over there when it comes to gimp

hi br7. i searched the gimp forum 4 any threads about problems downloading, running, or opening gimp. nothing showed up. i'm going to hold off on this 4 now. i checked my pc specs online, and on my invoice, and didn't see anything about MMX technology. i'll either google 4 this info, or just get w/dell chat. if any of the fellas have any info on this i'll welcome it as always. i've yet to join gimp's forum, and post a thread about this.

if i could bypass that it'll be better seeing that i wouldn't b able 2 download it anyway.

mmx has been standard and/or replaced long ago and far away, back in the pentium 1 days there were p166 and p200 and deluxe models with mmx like the last p1 233mmx

that was over 10 years ago
