    PC price drop

    I like to keep a config of the next PC I want to buy, and then update it regularly as new components become available and prices drop.

    I noticed a big price drop (in Australian dollars) between April and May, here's

    1st April:
    $445 - Intel Core2 Duo E6600
    $195 - Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3P
    $268 - 2 x Seagate 320 GB SATA II
    $369 - 2 GB C4 Corsair TWinx
    $184 - Antec Sonata II
    $69  - Pioneer 212D Black
    $275 - Powercolor 256MB X1950 Pro VIVO
    =====================================
    Total: $1805

    10th May:
    $305 - Intel Core2 Duo E6600
    $175 - Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3P
    $210 - 2 x Seagate 320 GB SATA II
    $289 - 2 GB C4 Corsair TWinx
    $182 - Antec Sonata II
    $59  - Pioneer 212D Black
    $269 - Powercolor 256MB X1950 Pro VIVO
    =====================================
    Total: $1489

    That's quite a price drop in just 1 month. With the $316 savings, I could upgrade the specs to a GeForce 8800 GTS 320 MB and have some left over for an UPS.

      Looks great, but I would avoid ATI due to rubbish Linux binary drivers; fine for XP though, and better than Nvdia at the moment for Vista.

      My next upgrade will probably be when quad cores are as mainstream as dual cores are now. It would be sooner if I could somehow find a use for my current PC.

        I'm having trouble finding a reason to upgrade - everything I want to do on the PC works fine as it is.

        Also the same problem of having to get rid of my current PCs, can't keep giving them away to friends because they have their own PCs to get rid of, and I practically have a computer for every room already.

          Exact same situation. Except the reason I don't want to give mine away is because they're far too expensive.

              Still no plans to buy a new computer yet, but if I were to today, these are the specs (changed parts in bold):

              $302 - Intel Core2 Duo E6600
              $239 - Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R
              $278 - 2 x Seagate 320 GB SATA II NCQ
              $329 - 2 GB 8500 C5D Corsair Twinx (DDR2)
              $169 - Antec Sonata II
              $59  - Pioneer 212D SATA Black
              $429 - XFX 320MB 8800 GTS
              =====================================
              Total: $1805

              The very spooky part is that the total price is exactly the same as that of the one in April, even though most of the components have been changed!

                Are all these 64 bit dual core CPUs cool running? I recently aquired an
                AMD 5200+ duo-core so I'm wondering if Intels are similar. About
                all I can get on Google is stuff about Notebook PCs stepping down
                the CPU clock to consume less power and run cooler. I definitely don't
                want another PC that locks up or needs noisy fans like my Pentium D
                machines, so I'm curious.

                  the core2 duo and amd64x2 share similar low power low heat, newer versions with even smaller die's even more so

                  the pentium d was a mistake

                    Thanks for the info. I'll be glad when I phase the remaining one out.
