    Nero 8 recoding VERY slow

I recently purchased and installed Nero 8 on my wife's new HP Slimline PC with dual processors. When she uses Nero Recode to put videos on her iPod, I expected with the faster processor (two of them no less) that it would be blazing. In reality it will take over two hours to recode a 2 hour movie.
My personal PC with Nero 7 and only one processor smokes compared to my wife's system.
I have checked her DMA settings (actually had to go into system setup to check DMA settings in this HP/Vista OS. Couldn't see anything under Device Manager) and it is correctly set for DMA.
    Any ideas appreciated.

even in pio mode you will be reading or writting at 1 MB/s about an hour for a single layer dvd

sure she's got enough ram for vista and nero 8?

    what model of HP slimline?

It's an HP s3200t running 2 Gb of ram.
Sorry, I'm not following your comment about running in PIO mode.

I just can't figure out why my older slower PC would do recoding much faster.

is her dual core using both cores at 100% with recode? task manager?

being in pio mode vs dma would only limit you to an hour or so time

vista sucks and I am sure that HP could crap it down even further

          Had exactly the same issues.
Loaded Nero 8 on 1 computer
          Kept Nero 7 on other
Same file Encoded way faster on Nero 7.
Then loaded Nero 8 to the computer where Nero 7 outpaced Nero 8.
Encoding way slower on previously faster computer.
          Difference? Nero 8
          Checked the settings
          Tried various permutations
Found a solution in the Profile
          Default Profile is Nero AVC
Changed it to Nero Standard and Voila, worked closer to the performance of Nero 7.
Still a little slower but waaaaay better

I had the same experience: Shifting from AVC to Nero Standard reduced my compile time by a factor of 10 or more. What gives? AVC is supposed to be the newer and better CODEC.

              Same Problem

I have a Dual Core 2 2.0GHz 4GB Ram and have just decided to try Recode 3 after using AutoGK.

AutoGK can render on average a 2-pass HQ encode to Xvid on my system in less than 1hr 30mins.

with Nero's Recode 3 to AVC takes almost 4hrs.

Looks like I'll need to put off H.264/AVC untill I find a faster program. I always thought that Nero Recode was meant to be one of the fastest 2-pass encoders.Very dissapointed I haven't tried the older versions though.

hmm odd it takes around 1 hour and 40ish mins to encode my 1 hour and 46 minute movie using Nero 8 set to AVC Cinema 2Pass High Quality on my Core 2 8400 @ 3Ghz.

I'm encoding right now, and it has taken around 20 minutes to run through the first pass and has dropped back to around 30frames on the second pass.
